Agriculture Education
Prince Edward Island

An initiative of the
Prince Edward Island Agriculture
Sector Council Inc.
What is it?
Agriculture Education is a new industry-supported initiative designed to work in partnership with Island educators.

Agriculture Education is intended to help Prince Edward Island children increase their awareness and understanding of why our food system is essential in society.

Why do we need it?
Today's children tend to be a more urban-oriented generation. Many of them have little understanding of the opportunities available within our agriculture industry. Children must be exposed to the necessity of sustainable agriculture practices to ensure that the future of our food supply is secure. We must have thoroughly educated children who understand the importance and the background of Prince Edward Island's number one industry.

On Prince Edward Island, the agri-food industry:

  • employs one out of four people directly or indirectly
  • involves the use of advanced technology (biotechnology, genetic engineering, information technology, etc.)
  • is scientific and business oriented
How can it help the Agri-Food industry?
Through various types of classroom resources, the agri-food industry has an opportunity to expose Prince Edward Island's 24,000 students and their 1,500 teachers to recent agricultural information.

It is a great opportunity to promote agriculture awareness and an understanding of the importance of agriculture to all members of society.

How can it help teachers?
The program will provide resource material for Grades 1-12 that corresponds to the Prince Edward Island education curriculum. Complete packages, which include teacher guides, unit plans, references, posters and activity sheets will be made available to every Island teacher.

Educators will be able to use agriculture topics as basic concepts in teaching the prescribed curriculum and have hands on resource material for all grade levels. Human resources in the form of industry speakers, tour guides and workshop resource leaders will provide assistance in the classroom as well as professional development and teacher in-service.
