Physical Education The goal of the Physical Education (P.E.) program is to provide a well-rounded program to all students in the school, incorporating the 5 areas of games, gymnastics, dance, fitness and outdoor activities. The P.E. program is delivered in 4 main ways: classes, intramurals (ie noon-hour activities), school teams and clubs. All students have P.E. or "gym class" for 30 minutes, every second day taught by a P.E. specialist. Students are urged to wear comfortable clothing (ie sweatpants or shorts) and must wear sneakers in the gym. In instructional class time, the grade 1's and 2's work on locomotor skills like running, jumping, etc., equipment skills using balls, beanbags and ropes, and tumbling skills such as rolls and balances. In grades 3 and 4, the students work at improving their own skills in a number of sport areas, including team sports, individual sports and gymnastics. In grades 5 and 6 the emphasis is on using the skills learned in game situations, while still working on self-improvement. To give the older students, in particular, the opportunity to apply the skills learned, and to participate in more organized activities, there is an intramural program, which runs most noon hours, all year long. Any students, in grades 4, 5, and 6, who want to play in the various sports, are welcome to join in these noon hour activities. Choices change as the year goes on, and include team sports, such as soccer, floor hockey, basketball, beachball, volleyball and softball, as well as individual sports such as badminton and track and field. The main idea is to give students a chance to use the skills they have been learning in class. For those students who want to take part in a more competitive level of sport there are also the school teams. Currently our school has teams in soccer, cross country running, basketball, badminton, wrestling, softball and track and field. These teams practice, usually after school, in preparation for competition with other schools from this part of the province (ie zone competition), and also, sometimes, for province-wide competition. For most of these teams there is a limited number of players that can be taken to the competition, therefore students "try out" for the teams. Typically grade 5 and 6 students make up most of the school teams, but occasionally younger students are chosen as well. Alberton Elementary has been very fortunate to have a large number of volunteers (parents and teachers) to help coach the various teams. In all school teams, the focus is on refining the personal and team skills of the players, and on applying all aspects of "fair play" in interaction witht students from other schools. Overall the P.E. program tries to have "something for everyone", and to give the children a chance to be active and have fun with other students. Miss Heather Noye |
