Everything You Need to Know About Doing An
Elementary Science Fair Project

Our class started doing research for our Science Fair projects
in the fall. We searched the internet and discovered many of the Science fair sites
were too hard for younger students to understand. We found that many of the rules and regulations were too confusing for us. When we learned that we might be able to make a web page, we decided this topic might be a way that we could help kids like ourselves.
Our school, Athena Consolidated
School, holds a school wide Science Fair each year. Nearly all grade 1 to grade 6 students participate, and we always hope that we will get more projects from the grade 7-9 level. Come visit
the Photo Gallery from our
2001 Athena Science Fair. This year we had 121
projects with
187
students participating!
Many parents and guests visited our Fair and we think it was a
big success!
At our school the grades 1, 2, and 3’s do Science Projects as
if it were a “show and tell”. The younger grades get ideas by doing Science with their teachers in the classroom.
With
help from their parents, they come up with some wonderful projects. They love to share their projects
with students, guests, and our “judges” who are assigned to visit with
just the little children. All grade 1, 2, and 3 students who enter, receive a Participation Ribbon and
are given recognition in front of the school at the afternoon Awards Ceremony. It is great fun to be able to shine in front of older brothers and sisters!
Grades 4-6 teachers encourage their students to do Science Fair projects. Often students
complete projects for their class as Science marks. They are then welcome to enter their projects in the school Science Fair....and they usually do!
Sometimes the hardest part of doing a Science Project is finding a topic. Here are some
project titles that our students have done in the past few years. Perhaps they will help you with an idea for your project. It is important to understand what a
science fair project is. How To Do Science Fair Projects
helps explain the main parts of doing
a science fair Project.
Our Science Fair is meant to be fun, so we try to take the stress off the
students and the judges. We do this by selecting the top projects instead of by ranking them as first, second and third. The judges pick their favorite projects in grades 4-6 and in 7-9 and medals are engraved and given to each participant.
Take a look at our Judges Instructions.
During our Fair we interviewed some of the participants, a parent, and a
teacher who visited our fair. Here is what they had to say in their
interviews.
If you are a teacher or parent helping to organize a school Science Fair your might want to look over this
Checklist.
Winning grade 4 -9 projects go on to the next level...the Western School Board Science Fair which this year is held on March 3, 2001. From this Fair the 40 winning projects will be selected to go on to the
PEI Provincial Science Fair held in Charlottetown April 5, 2001.
