Mr. Harris
How do you encourage your students to enter the Science Fair? Mr. Harris: "I tell the students how important science is, how much fun it can be, and how much they can learn about science. All of my students do a science fair project." Did your kids ever win at the Science Fair? Mr. Harris: "Yes, they have won at the School Science Fair, as well as the District and Provincial fairs." What have your kids done for Science Fair Projects? Mr. Harris: "The kids have done projects on things like short term memory, toilet bowl sanitizer, soil erosion, etc.." Have your ever helped out your students with their projects? Mr. Harris: "Yes, I've helped them come up with ideas for their projects. They present them in class and the students and I give them pointers on how to improve them." How long have you been encouraging your children to do Science Fair projects? Mr. Harris: "I have been encouraging my students for the last couple of years, but I have been supporting my own children for the last 12 or 13 years." How may people in your class this year were in the Science Fair? Mr. Harris: "I had 28 students enter the fair. How do you encourage your students to be in the Science Fair? Mr. Harris: "I show an interest in what they are doing, help them if they need help and I make a point to go to the science fair to see their projects on display."

How did you like our Science Fair? Mrs. Guyette: "I enjoyed the displays and projects, obviously a lot of work and fun went into them." Is a science fair important? Mrs. Guyette: "I think that a science fair is important because it makes kids think, they learn to do research, to solve problems and find answers to their questions." What type of project did you like best? Mrs. Guyette: "I like projects that inform me about health and nutrition, I like projects that have experiments that I can try. I also like consumer information projects." What do you think we learned? Mrs. Guyette: "I believe the students learn by researching their own projects, and by viewing others. Science is about so many different subjects. Students pick project topics that interest them and learn how to find information on their own." Would you like to add anything else? Mrs. Guyette: "When I was in school we didn’t hold science fairs. I have four sons at Athena and so I get to do lots of projects now with them. Everyone has different interests." "I think that the internet has made finding project ideas harder and easier at the same time. I makes it easier because you can see so many different ideas, but that also makes it harder to choose. The internet makes it much easier to do research because it organizes categories for you." "Science fairs should be encouraged for all grade levels. It shows that academics are fun and competition is not just for sports." Click the Globe to go back |

What do you think the students should keep in mind when they present their projects? "The students should keep certain things in mind as they prepare for, and are judged at Science Fairs, such as: 1) Always stand up when the Judges approach your display and introduce yourself and your partner. 2) Tell the Judges what your are going to present to them. 3) Speak loud enough for the Judges to hear you. 4) Look at the Judges as you tell them about your project. 5) Never chew gum!!!
