    Implementation Plan

    Teacher's Role

Teacher introduces the students to the author Avi through a novel study. The teacher and teacher-librarian plan the author study. The teacher then presents the concept of an author study to the class and arranges for times to work in the library. After the students have had several sessions in the library the teacher gives them class time to work independently on the project. The teacher assists the students with the compilation of their reports as well as with the revising and editing. The teacher, in collaboration with the teacher-librarian, evaluates the students' work.

    Teacher-Librarian's Role

The teacher-librarian adds as many Avi books to the school collection as possible and gathers any other available resources about the author. The booklet to guide student research is compiled and time is made available to introduce the project to the students and to allow them to work in the resource center/library. The teacher-librarian assists the teacher in the evaluation of the process and products.

Schedule for Activities and Time Frame - Two class periods were used to introduce the author study to the students and several classes were spent gathering and processing information. The time spent on the organizing of the information and the writing process varied according to individual students. Some time at home was also used to complete the assignment.

Evaluation: Assessment of Students, Evaluation of Activity and Author Study

Students were assessed on both the process and product by the teacher and teacher-librarian. They were required to pass in all their work. The students were also asked to engage in a process of self-evaluation. (See accompanying evaluation rubric).
