About Our School
Birchwood Intermediate is located in the center
of beautiful Charlottetown, the capital city of the province of Prince Edward
Island. At present, approximately 285 students from Grade 7 to Grade 9 attend
the English, French Immersion, and Special Education programs. The staff
includes 1 Principal, 2 Vice-principals, 2 Administrative Assistants, 23
Teachers, 1 Teacher-Librarian, 6 Educational Assistants, 1 Guidance Counselor,
Youth Worker, 1 Outreach Worker, 1 French Monitor, 5 Custodial Staff, and 1
Birchwood is also fortunate to have a number of community outreach professionals
and a number of volunteers who contribute to the school on an ongoing basis.
At Birchwood Intermediate School, students take
part in the core subjects: mathematics, language arts, science, French, health,
and social studies, as well as exploratory experiences in the areas of art,
music, computer technology, home economics, industrial arts, and physical
Most students who have progressed through the elementary school system will
proceed to the regular Intermediate School courses in either the English, the
French Immersion, or the Integrated Special Education Program.
Courses within the authorized programs may be enriched, adapted, or modified in
an attempt to meet the individual needs of students.
Gifted students, identified as those who, by virtue of outstanding abilities,
are capable of high performance, require programs above and beyond those offered
through the regular curriculum. These programs, specifically intended for the
academically-gifted, are offered within subject-areas at Birchwood as required.
Modified courses or resource programs are offered as alternatives designed to
meet the individual academic needs of students. These programs are specifically
intended for students who are experiencing difficulty with the regular academic
program in specific areas.
