Counselor's Corner
Guidance Counseling Services
Counseling services are available to all students at Birchwood Intermediate.
Our counseling program is intended to promote and enhance student success in
academic, personal, and social development. Support services are generally
delivered through individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom
education.
A Great Year
2007 continues to be another exciting year as we
proactively work with our students to find personal success. Our student
services team organize several groups to meet our students’ needs,
such as social skill development, addictions education, anger management, and
cultural diversity promotion. Parents and guardians should also stay tuned for
available sessions offered throughout the year. Please contact our school counsellor, Mr. MacInnis,
regarding counseling initiatives.
Christmas Miracle Program
A special thank you to all staff members and community members who volunteered
and donated to our annual Christmas Miracle program. Many Birchwood families
benefited from your effort and kindness.
The Adventure Group
The Adventure Group is currently running an after-school program at Birchwood
School. The group leaders have been offering our students a variety of after
school activities in our school. The group meets every day after school between
3:00 and 6:00 PM to get help with homework and enjoy food, games, sports,
computers, movies, and other great activities. All students are welcome to join
the group in the art room any day throughout the week. Thanks to the Royal Bank
of Canada for committing the necessary funding to help run this program.
Thank You
We would like to say a special thanks to Howard Watts and Play It Again Sports
for helping us out with our newest after-school program, which will focus on
boxing skills, fitness training, and self-discipline growth. Howard will be
working with a small group of Birchwood students Mondays after school. Thanks to
Pat Doherty, our youth service worker, for spearheading this effort.
International Friendship Group
The International Friendship Group continues to meet once a month to share
cultural experiences and promote a positive school climate. Wendy Poirier, our
ESL teacher, will join the International Friendship Group. Wendy will be working
hard to support our increasing number of immigrant students in their desire to
learn English and adapt to our school and community.
