The Scarecrow

A couple of weeks ago, a cold day in July, I was arguing with my mother about her beliefs on aliens, ghosts, and other myths and legends. She brought up the subject of ghosts. She aked me if I believed in spirits. Well of course I said no. I said, " I've been using Ouiji boards and having spiritual 'get togethers' since I was in grade 6, nothing's happened to me yet, and I'm not going to start believing in them now."
She gave me a weird look, as if she thought I was crazy. She started to tell me a story mainly to scare me I think. When she started to tell the story, she seemed to be just joking around. About half way through, there seemed to be a possessed sound to her voice.
It started with three young girls, Sheila, Ashley, and Angela. They were best friends, 'had been since first grade. The night before halloween, they all decided to stay the night at Ashley's house. That night they were getting really bored, so they decided that it would be fun to to pull a prank on old farmer Joe. So Sheila dared Ashley to go into joe's corn field and steal his scarecrow. Sheila thought that it would be really funny so she added 10 dollars to the bet if she did it.
Ashley was sent out, while the two girls waited and waited, but she never returned. They went out to find her.
When the girls arrived at the scarecrow, there on the ground laid Ashley. On top of her was the scarecrow. Apparently, when Ashley had gone to take down the scarecrow, the large post had fallen and pierced through the hem of her skirt, and she had died of fright.
When the police came to take away the body, they also put the scarecrow back up on the pole. On the scarecrow's face there was a smirk, as if it had accomplished something.
I asked my mother why she acted so emotional. She told me that she was the girl who had died. She walked away, went down the hall, and she disappeared. I never saw my mother again.
