|
A Great Canadian Mystery Virtual
Field Trip
Introduction:
For over two hundred years searchers have tried to discover
if there is buried treasure on Oak Island.
Today you will begin a tour of Oak Island. By the
end of the tour you may decide that the story of Oak Island is a hoax but
you might believe, as many people do, that Oak Island guards buried treasure.
Directions:
On each stop, click on the picture and you
will be taken to a web site that will give you the answers to the questions
which are written to the right of the picture. Write the answers
to your questions on loose leaf paper and keep the paper in your file folder
labeled "Mystery and Wonder". You will be given an evaluation sheet
so that you know how your answers will be marked. Remember to write
in complete sentences.
STOP 1 The Secret of Oak Island
Over two hundred years ago, three
boys playing on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia, discovered a saucer
shaped hollow. Was this the site of buried treasure, as the boys
believed ?
People today are still trying
to discover the answer to that question. Let's begin our tour of
Oak Island
|
What lies at the bottom of the money pit ?
Read the introduction on this page and then write a diary
entry as if you were one of the boys who discovered the mysterious site
on Oak Island. Start your entry with "Dear Diary" or "Dear
Journal". Write at least one half a page to describe your excitement
about the discovery on Oak Island. Include in your diary entry an
appropriate date, a description of the site, and a description of
what you think is contained in the maze of tunnels.
|
STOP 2 The story of Oak Island
Read the timeline of Oak Island and answer the following questions.
|
1. How many people have been killed so far in the
search for treasure at Oak Island ?
2. Name the three companies involved in the search
from 1803-1893. |
STOP 3 Stone Inscriptions
A stone with markings or inscriptions was found in
the pit in 1803. The translation from the stone caused great excitement
for the people who were digging at the site. Try to find out what
caused with excitement
 |
1. Read the information about the stone by clicking
on the picture of the miner. After you read about the stone, click on translation
to discover the code used for the message.
2. Draw an outline of a stone and using the code provided,
write your own message. Pretend that you are a pirate or someone
who has left treasure at the site. Your message must be appropriate,
and something that would keep the explorers of Oak Island guessing about
the "money pit". Provide a translation of your message. |
STOP 4 Artifacts from Oak
Island
Many
artifacts (objects) have been found at the Oak Island site including a
pair
of Spanish-American scissors. Find out what else searchers have discovered
!
|
1.Check out the list of artifacts (bottom half of the
web page) found on Oak Island by clicking on the magnifying glass.
2. Once you have read the list decide which three discoveries
you think were the most important to the searchers. These three objects
should be ones which would convince skeptics that there really is a treasure
of some sort at Oak Island.
3. Explain why you think each of the three objects
would have been especially important to the search teams.
|
STOP 5 Where in the world
is Oak Island ?
Click on the map to find the location of Oak Island
and then answer the question.
|
1. A friend of yours has e-mailed you from the United
States. He wants to know where Oak Island is located. Write
a paragraph to describe the location of Oak Island. In your description
include the province, the part of the province and the bay that surrounds
Oak Island. Your response might be something like: "Dear Dan,
I received your message about Oak Island. It has a really interesting
story behind it. This is where Oak Island is located . . . ." |
STOP 6 Pick a theory
Try and decide who the real culprit is behind the mystery of Oak Island.
|
1. Read the eight theories about the mystery of
Oak Island. Pick the one which you think is most reasonable/likely
and explain why you think it might be the answer to this two hundred year
old mystery. |
STOP7 Can I visit Oak Island ?
Read the "Fact and Question" (F&Q) page and
answer the following four questions in complete sentences.
|
1. How much money would it cost to decide what
to do next at Oak Island ?
2. Can the public visit Oak Island ?
3. When was the last work done on the exploration
of Oak Island ?
4. Who carried out that work ? |
