Parent Information Night
Birchwood will be holding an information night for grade six parents on
Thursday, May 15th at 7:00pm in the Library. All interested parents are invited
to attend. Teachers will be present to answer any curriculum concerns and Mr.
Murphy will discuss the Birchwood Band Program. All students interested in the
band program will be accepted. Grade six students are invited to attend an
orientation visit to Birchwood in the morning on May 16th.
Human Rights Program
Twenty-seven students will be traveling to Washington, D.C. from May 18-21st.
While there, the students will visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the
Smithsonian Institutes, various memorials, the Canadian Embassy, and the Kennedy
Center for Performing Arts. On Friday, May 2, there was pot luck Shabbat dinner
at Birchwood, This gave the P.E.I. Jewish community an opportunity to meet the
students who are participating in the Asper Foundation Program.
The public Yom Hashoah program (the Holocaust Memorial service) was held at the
school on Saturday, May 3rd with the doors opening at 6:30. The program feature
the play recently presented by Birchwood at the Eastern School District Drama
Festival, I Never Saw a Butterfly, as well as a presentation by the human rights
students. The guest speaker was Leo Adler, who is the Director of national
Affairs for the Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies in Toronto. Mr.
Adler is the son the Holocaust survivor. We invited all Birchwood family and
friends, as well as the general public, to attend. A Holocaust Memorial service
was held for students and staff on Monday, May 5th.
Library
Some new books recently arrived in the library. Students are invited to check
these out. Families are also reminded to track down overdue library books and to
return them to the school as soon as possible. Seventy overdue/lost books
represent a huge loss to our collection. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Band SEVEC Exchange
The Birchwood Grade 9 Band will be hosting Carleton Place HS Band from Ontario
this week. The group will arrive on Wednesday, May 7th and depart on May 14th
with a full week of activities planned for their stay on P.E.I. Birchwood Band
will then travel to Carleton Place on May 27th for a week of activities in the
Ottawa area including a day trip to Montreal for sightseeing.
Heritage Fair
Birchwood Annual Heritage Fair was held at the school on April 9th. It was a
huge success 13 projects were awarded as finalists for this year. Eight will be
moving on to represent Birchwood at the Provincial Heritage Fair on May 9th.
Those students will be:
Alex, Homa, Adam, William, Cody, Emma, Halen, Amy. The five honorable
mentions are:
Parshuram, Jennifer, Bonah, Sarah, Alex, Hailey and Vicky.
Wind Turbines Competition
Birchwood Staff and students would like to congratulate the eight students who
represented Birchwood this weekend at the Wind Turbine Competition in Kinkora.
This was the first ever wind turbine competition event on P.E.I. and our
students represented Birchwood very well. The competition itself had nine teams
competing in three different categories. One of our Birchwood teams took home
top honors by placing first in the wind turbine design competition. The two
teams that participated in the competition where made up made up of the
following students: Kane, Chris, Jennifer and Steven and the design championship
team included Alex, Zahra, David and Brian. Birchwood staff would also like to
thank Duane for assisting with the travel to and from the event, he gave his
entire Saturday to ensure the teams were able to make the competition. Great job
to all!
Chess Club
Congratulations to Jacob and Jon (9-3 Miss Betts’ homeroom) who represented
Birchwood at the Provincial Chess Tournament. Jacob won for the grade 9 division
and will be going on to the National Chess Championship in Alberta this month.
We wish you the best of luck Jacob! Thank you to all the students, staff and
parents who participated in the cake auction to help raise funds for the trip!
Chess club takes place every day 5 in the art room at lunch and all are welcome
to come and play. For more information contact Ms. O’Brien at

everyone who made/bought cakes for the cake auction. We raised almost $400.00
for Jacob and he was over the moon. A special thank you to Gary Devine for being
our Auctioneer Extraordinaire and Kim Mason for all of her work.
Easter Seals Ambassador
Tim Hortons Easter Seals Ambassador for 2008 is a Grade 6 student from Prince
Street Elementary School, her name is Sonja Walker. The Tour made a stop at
Birchwood School on Tuesday, April 22 where the School has made a generous
donation of $400.00
Birchwood Drama Club Performs at Festival
The Eastern School District was proud to present the 21st Annual Drama Festival
which took place between April 15-18. Congratulations are extended to the
Birchwood Drama Club members Alanna, Bita, Simon, Eve, Jose, Jennifer, Hailey,
and Bonah for their outstanding performances in “I Never Saw Another Butterfly”
on stage at Confederation Center of the Arts, April 17th. A special thank you to
Repeats Clothing Store for their help with costumes
Hockey Pool
We held a Fall Hockey Pool at Birchwood and congratulations to the following
winners: Kim Mason $48.00, Tony Doyle $33.60 and Marc Duguay $14.40. Thanks to
the 49 teams that participated in this event.

office also provides information to students about wage rates, labour laws and

S.A.V.E.
Students Against Violence Everywhere is a youth group working currently at
Morell and Montague Regional High School. S.A.V.E. is committed to eliminating
relationship violence on Prince Edward island and beyond. On Saturday, May 10th
at 7p.m. at the Montague Curling Club, A Touch of Gold will present the Mother’s
Day Diamond Dinner and Draw.
1st prize: 14K Canadian Diamond Trinity Ring, valued at $300.00
2nd prize: Diamond “Circle of Life” pendant, valued at $600.00
3rd prize: Diamond Ladies Bulova Watch, valued at $400.00
Cost per person: $50 Dinner and Draw or $20 Dinner only
