
Alva Myrdal was the winner of the 1982 Nobel Peace Prize. She was a tireless campaigner for disarmament and world peace. She started her career as a teacher, became a prison assistant, held a number of high ranking UN posts after World War II, and served as a Swedish ambassador to India from 1955 to 1961. She worked for 11 years as a disarmament negotiator in Geneva. Alva Myrdal was also a campaigner for population control, women's rights and child care. She has won five peace prize awards.
