Carl Von Ossietzky was a German pacifist. He was the editor of the weekly "Weltbuhne" and a leader of the peace movement in Germany. In 1932 he was sent to jail for articles exposing secret rearmament in Germany. Then in 1932 he was sent to a concentration camp. He was dangerously ill in 1936 so they moved him to the prison hospital shortly before the announcement was made that he was the winner of the 1935 Nobel peace prize. The Germans protested against his acceptance and banned all Germans from future peace prizes. Sadly two short years later, still imprisoned, he died after long term suffering from tuberculosis.
