Birchwood's Philosophy
A Quality Education in a Caring Disciplined Environment
Birchwood Intermediate School is a multi-faceted school offering programs in
English, French Immersion and Special Education. Our students are adolescents
undergoing a complex developmental stage during which they struggle for
identity, independence and peer approval. Our goal at Birchwood is to provide
and develop programs that recognize the unique nature of this age group and that
strive to meet their needs in a mutually respectful and supportive environment.
We agree:
- That school should be committed to preparing young adolescent students
with the understanding and abilities necessary to cope with their own
changes from childhood to adolescence and with the academic skills and
knowledge essential for continued school success and life-long learning.
- That learning should be a multi-dimensional, exploratory experience in
which participation is the primary factor.
- That school should be a place where trusting relationships create an
environment for personal growth and intellectual development.
- That school should maintain a social climate which involves everyone in
the school community and which is based on respect, acceptance and
responsibility for self, others and property used.
- That quality education should include consistent and fair discipline
policies understood and followed by students, staff and administration.
- That open and effective communication with parents and the community is
vital to the educational process.
We C.A.R.E. - Concerned About Reaching Everyone
The Eastern School District's "Caring Places to Learn" policy is a
wide-ranging comprehensive policy designed to ensure that schools in the Eastern
District provide a healthy, safe, and supportive working and learning
environment for every student and staff member.
Thousands of personal interactions occur in the Eastern District School every
day, and these interactions are the focus of this policy. The policy guides the
way people in our school communities treat each other, emphasizing that students
and staff demonstrate regard, concern and respect for the unique differences and
worth of every individual.
Achieving and maintaining this positive climate is the responsibility of
everyone involved in education in the Eastern District School - students,
parents and teachers, support staff and trustees. There are high expectations
for all members of Eastern District School communities and these expectations
are met and exceeded daily on a regular basis. We continually strive to do
better at these and work hard to make sure that our school is inclusive,
supportive, and healthy for all.
