Rules for Students Traveling on School Buses

We are extremely fortunate at Central Queens to have an excellent group of bus drivers who have a definite interest and concern for the safety of your children.  They would greatly appreciate any assistance you are able to give them.

The students are expected to be waiting to the right side of the driving lane in the direction the bus is traveling. When students leave the bus they are to cross the highway with the flashing lights if crossing is necessary. It is important to impress on the student that they remain seated and talk in a soft tone while traveling on the bus. Bus drivers require this type of cooperation and behavior in order to drive safely.

Students who misbehave on the bus, are reported to the Administration by the bus driver. The Administration advises the parent of the misbehavior and indicates that this is a warning. A repeat of this misbehavior could mean a suspension from using the bus.

The bus driver's main area of concentration must be driving the school bus. Every student who misbehaves on a bus decreases the degree of concentration of the bus driver, thus chances of becoming involved in an accident are increased.

  1. Students must use the seat to which they are assigned.
  2. Students must remain seated while on the bus.
  3. Students must not throw objects inside the bus or outside the windows of the bus.
  4. Students must not use vulgar language, fight, push or shove, etc., while on the bus.
  5. Students must get on and off the bus in an orderly manner.
  6. Students may not leave a school bus at a place other than their normal point of departure without written permission from their parents.
Students require written permission from parents when there is a change in their pick-up or drop-off locations on a particular day. Buses are not available to large groups of  students who need to travel on a particular bus from time to time (birthday parties, etc.). All of our buses are filled close to capacity. Permission will have to be approved by the office.

Parking Lot Safety

The parking lot at Central Queens is a very busy place. Drivers of all vehicles are asked to exercise caution as they enter, drive through and exit the parking lot. When you pick your child up at the end of the day, please park facing the buses.

  Footwear

The students are expected to have footwear that will be used for indoor wear only. This could be the same footwear that is used in the Physical Education Program. Outdoor footwear is to be removed and left in the boot change areas. All footwear should be clearly marked and properly fastened. identification.

  Physical Education Dress

Students are encouraged to bring a change of clothing for Physical Education classes. This may be gym pants or shorts and a tee shirt.   A change of clothing allows for free movement in the gym, promotes cleanliness, and provides for more comfort in other classes. Running shoes/sneakers are to be worn in the gym.  Deodorant is recommended for grade 5 and 6 students.

School Supplies

Individual teachers will inform parents concerning supplies your child will need for the school year. Students in Grades 1 and 2 will have their individual school supplies provided by the school. The cost will be $35.00 for Grade 1 and 2 students. If you have not already paid this fee, it may be forwarded to the classroom teacher during the month of September. Thank you!

Environment Committee

We would like to thank all students and parents for their cooperation in helping make our school an environmentally friendly building. We would encourage parents to purchase reusable containers for juice and lunches to help reduce waste.

Administering Medication

Students may take medication provided it is prescribed by a physician. A 'Permission Form' for administering medication should be completed by parents for those students. This form is available from the secretary upon request. The school does not administer Aspirin or Tylenol to students. All medication will be stored and located in a locked medicine cabinet in the office.

Home & School

The Central Queens Home & School is an organized parents group, whose objective is to provide a liaison between parents and the school. It provides opportunities for parents to assist and support the school with various projects. Central Queens Home & School provides a forum for parents to raise issues and bring forward their viewpoints. It works with the PEI Home & School Federation to provide parents with information on education issues and other important and interesting topics concerning our children. Central Queens Home & School confers with the Eastern School Board and the Department of Education and is frequently asked for feedback on various items on their agendas. Most importantly, the Central Queens Home & School is in place to ensure that whatever the needs of our school, we will help to provide for our children to make their school experience the best. Join our membership and be a partner with the school! for more information please contact:

The school health program will include the following:

Vision and Hearing Screening

  • For those grade 1 students who did not attend 4 year assessment
  • For those students who were referred to the nurse by teachers, parents, or self referred, who suspect a problem in either area
  • For follow-up screen with students with a known visual or hearing problem.
  • For those students new to the school

Health Teaching - May be conducted individually, or in classroom setting.

Immunization - We are currently continuing Hepatitis B immunization for all grade 3 students who have not been immunized for Hepatitis B. Specific consents will be sent to parents of students. The nurse must receive the signed consent before a child is immunized.

Family Life Education - May assist grade 6 teachers in carrying out family life program, outlined by the Dept. of Education.

Follow up of children with specific health conditions, such as diabetes, reactions, i.e.: anaphylaxis, etc.

Parents are encouraged to contact the school health nurse if they have any concerns about their child. She may be contacted either through the school, or at the Public Health Nursing office at 368-4530.

Peanut-Nut Free School Policy

Peanut-Nut Free School Policy

Due to a number of students who attend our school with severe life threatening allergies to peanuts, peanut products, and other forms of nuts, Central Queens Elementary needs to become as safe an environment as possible for these students. Central Queens will be expanding its nut alert zones to include the whole school. Students and staff are requested to not bring any peanut or nut products in snacks or lunches on the bus or to school. Everyone's cooperation in helping our school be a safe environment for all students is much appreciated.

 Homework Expectations

The Central Queens Elementary community believes that homework is an important and necessary part of our school program. Homework provides an opportunity for the reinforcement of skills already learned. It also provides students with the opportunity to develop positive study habits. Homework is an excellent form of communication that allows home to know what is being taught in school and how their child is progressing.

Although there are many variables which affect time spent on homework, Central Queens Elementary School community makes the following recommendations:

Grades 1 and 2,   10 - 20 minutes.

Grades 3 and 4,   20 - 30 minutes.

Grades 5 and 6,   approximately 30 minutes.

Please contact your child's teacher if, despite your support, your child is exceeding the recommended their nightly homework time limits. Normally, homework will not be assigned on weekends. However, weekend homework may be necessary to complete projects and study for tests.
