HOME & SCHOOL
NEWS
The
next Home & School meeting will be
held on May 2nd at 6:00
pm in the library. All are welcome.
SCENT-FREE
We would like to remind everyone of the scent-free policy in place.
We have several individuals who are particularly sensitive to scents and who
have commented on this being a concern at recent meetings. Thank you for
respecting everyone’s health and comfort.
LITERACY LOWDOWN
The grade 6 students at Central Queens will, once again this year,
take part in a province-wide reading and writing assessment. The dates for this
assessment are May 10 & 11th and May 17 & 18th.
The purpose is to see how well students across the province are doing in the
area of reading comprehension and writing. These assessments are corrected in
July by a group of grade 6 teachers using one rubric to score the results. In
all, the students will read 4 stories. They will include literal, evaluative,
and inferential questions. The students will also be expected to write stories
based on two different prompts and take them to good copy to show their ability
to edit and revise their work. The areas evaluated in the writing include ideas,
organization and conventions. The results of these assessments give direction to
the Department of Education regarding curriculum outcomes that require further
development at the elementary level. This information helps when choosing new
programs and resources to be used in the classroom. Parents will receive their
child’s results in the Fall and the results will simply indicate whether the
child met expectations or not.
