Literacy at EWS

Grade 8 Book Club Unit with Mr. Phalen

The Grade 8D class has signed up to try out a book club unit on History Comes Alive. It is a pilot program being offered by the Department of Education.  The book club includes a variety of books geared towards the students’ learning. The focus of the book club is centered on the Inquiry Question "How do people meet the challenges of tough times?"

The students will each read a book and then discuss in groups what is happening in their books. Some of the things the students will discuss are challenges the main character(s) maybe facing and how the characters develop solutions to the problems they encounter.

The four novels that are included in the Book Club are as follows:

★ Camp X

★ The Wadjet Eye

★ Elephant Run

★ The Circle of Silver

There is also a read aloud book that is included which is called The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. The students have really enjoyed the book club so far and have been gaining a new knowledge of the challenges people face in life and how they deal with it.

Grade 9 Book Club with Mrs. Mutch

Grade 9 students in Mrs. Toole’s class are piloting a Department of Education Book Club Unit entitled Future Worlds. The book club encourages discussion amongst students, and is founded upon fostering a more realistic reading experience.  Although students are reading different novels, they are all guided by the same inquiry question: How are the issues of today explored through Science Fiction?

The four book club novels are:

★ Take Over

★ Invitation to the Game

★ Dark Life

★ The Other Side of the Island

In order to help students explore the inquiry question, we are reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins as a class.  Thus far, students are responding very well to the novels.  Their enthusiasm and willingness to try something new is quite admirable.

7C With Mrs. Coffin

Students were connecting to an essay about a student who was taken to task by his principal because he encouraged fellow students to wear shorts. This was against the school dress code. 7C students responded to the question: Should schools have the right to dictate what students can wear? The class was divided into 'yes' and 'no' groups where they had to work together to come up with reasons to support their opinions.  We had a 'whole class' debate on this issue, following the format of opening arguments, rebuttal, and closing statements. Students had to; effectively support their thinking with well constructed arguments, listen carefully to the opposing team to create counter arguments, and finally; summarize their most important points into a one minute statement. They learned that a supported opinion requires focus and well thought out ideas.  They had to select their most effective arguments and think quickly to counter the arguments of the opposing team. The class enjoyed this activity and hope to have more opportunities to practice these skills.

9A, C and D: Literacy in Science with Mr. Tremere

The French Immersion Grade 9 Science classes have just completed a unit of study on the periodic table.  In order to solidify their understanding of the periodic table and the meaning of all its numbers and symbols, students were given a choice between two different types of projects.  They could choose to research one element using the Internet and various sources in the Library and present that element orally to the class, preferably accompanied by an interesting visual, such as a power point presentation. The second choice available to the students was to make an exact replica of the periodic table itself larger than at least two sheets of Bristol board and present that to the class.  There was a wide range of interesting and effective presentations as a result of this project, however one project captured the admiration of everyone who has seen it.  Three students, Erica Puiras, Heather Simpson and Megan Ching created an exact replica of the periodic table using 16 pieces of Bristol Board measuring 9 ft by 8 ft! It’s such an inspirational example of visual literacy that John MacDonald has promised to make a wooden frame to support the table so it can be on permanent display in the hallways of the school.

Living Nativity Event

We are holding a ‘living nativity’ event in Canoe Cove on Dec 10 and 11th between 6 and 8pm. Admission by donation and all proceeds go towards the upkeep of the Canoe Cove Community Association.

Healthy Eating Tips    Snack Ideas for Kids!

Kids don’t always meet their nutritional needs during mealtimes.  Snacks throughout the day will give them the extra energy they need for school and other activities!

It’s always a good idea to keep healthy snacks close by - school bags are a great place.

Packing healthy snacks is the way to go.  Pack mini rice cakes, fresh fruit or nuts along with a bottle of water or a juice box.

Some other snack ideas include:

• fruit cups

• bite-sized vegetables (carrot sticks, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, turnip slices)

• cheese and whole-grain crackers

• yogurt with granola topping

• whole grain toast with unsweetened applesauce or nut butter

• whole wheat pita with hummus or bean dip

Try this healthy snack recipe that kids can take in a thermos when they are on the run!

The All Canadian Blueberry Smoothie!!

• 1 cup (500ml) of local blueberries, frozen
