Band Web Page:

Mr. Nabuurs has been having a great deal of technical computer problems which has meant problems with the band web/homework page.   We seem to have the problems under control and encourage parents and students to check the page regularly for skill assignments, tests, as well as the weekly band practice schedule and up coming performances.   You can find the page by clicking on "Band News" at the top right hand side of the school web page or by clicking on Mr. Nabuurs in the teachers list of the homework page.   Thanks for your patience with the technical problems.

Library

There will be a Winter Scholastic Book Fair at EWS from Tuesday - Friday, Feb 14-17th.  All classes will get an opportunity to visit the fair with their teacher.  Thursday afternoon, the Book Fair will move down to the lobby and parents will get an opportunity to do a little book browsing during Parent-Teacher Interviews Thursday evening and Friday morning.

Literacy News

The 8G’s have just finished reading stories of the Holocaust.  Each student selected a fictional or non-fictional book about the Holocaust and read it, while keeping a log tracking their understanding of what was happening by applying the reading strategies of connecting, questioning, inferring, visualizing, analyzing and synthesizing.  The stories are difficult to read about, but students have commented that they are inspired by the strength of the Holocaust survivors and that they have a new appreciation for all the comforts of their own lives.

Staff Changes

Heather Martin has moved to Queen Charlotte in Guidance until the end of the year and Jana Smith will be replacing her.  Amy MacNeill will be replacing Jana Smith’s 50% with Mrs. Keough in class 802.  Patty Lingley is on leave until the end of the year and Marlo Hahn will be replacing her.  Donna Sanderson is on leave Logan Roche will be doing her Phys Ed and Nick Phalen will be doing her Math until Ms. Sanderson’s return.

Queens County Music Festival

The Queens County Music Festival will be held from April 23rd to May 4th, 2012 and the PEI Kiwanis Music Festival will be held June 1st and 2nd.  We bring this to your attention because many school children enter the music festival each year.  If you require more information, please contact Kay Linkletter at our website: http://www.peikiwanismusicfestival.ca

Canada-Wide Science Fair 2012 (CESF 2012) Launch at UPEI

The Canada-Wide Science Fair is coming to PEI this year for the first time ever!  UPEI will be hosting CWSF 2012 from May 13th – 18th and we are excited to have this great event on the island.

The first national CWSF competition with 45 student winners representing 12 regions was held in 1962.  Since then, this national competition has grown to more than 100 regional science fairs across Canada.  Needless to say, the 2012, CWSF is a tremendous opportunity for the winning students who represent these regions and who will be competing for the national awards organized by Youth Science Canada and the local Host (UPEI) in partnership with government and local businesses.  It is also a unique opportunity for volunteers to assist with the delivery of this event.

Volunteers will be needed in many capacities from judging to hospitality, communications, food services, administration, school tours, exhibit set up, decorating, public viewing and more.  It estimated that some 200 to 300 volunteers will be needed in the various capacities.  If you have some time that you could contribute, please contact John Burka via e-mail at burka@upei.ca.  If you are particularly interested in judging, they should contact the Chief Judge, Barry Linkletter blinkletter@upei.ca... You can both judge and volunteer for other activities! Francophone judges (and volunteers) are particularly needed. For more information, contact John Burka at 566-0810W, 940-0738C or at the above e-mail.

Healthy Eating Tips from the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance for February 2012

Potatoes and Root Vegetables

Root vegetables refer to a group of vegetables that are actually plant roots.  There are several popular root vegetables which are grown on PEI and available year-round, including potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, turnip, parsnips, radishes and beets.

Root vegetables can be purchased from farmers all over PEI, and they are also sold in local grocery stores and farmers’ markets!

Nutritious roots!

Root vegetables make a great addition to a balanced diet, as they are generally low in calories, fat, sodium (salt) and high in fiber, potassium and vitamin C!  Keep in mind that the way in which we cook root vegetables often has a big impact on their overall nutritional quality. When preparing these vegetables, try to use low-fat method like baking, boiling and grilling, opposed to frying as often as possible. Also keep in mind that serving these vegetables with items like ketchup, full fat ranch dressing, sour cream and butter adds calories, fat, sodium and sugar.  Try to limit the amount and frequency that these toppings are served.

Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide

It is important for all Canadians to eat a variety of vegetables each day.  Canada’s Food Guide also recommends that we eat at least one orange vegetable each day.  Orange colored vegetables are a great source of vitamin A, which helps keep our eyes and immune system healthy and supports normal growth and development.  Root vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes are great choices for this recommendation.  Some tips for incorporating more orange vegetables into your diet include keeping carrot sticks cut up in the fridge for a quick snack or lunch item, and alternate between serving sweet potatoes with white potatoes with dinner.
