Island Winners At The 2001 ECMA's

Lennie Gallant - Album of the Year "Lennie Gallant Live", Male Artist of the Year, Roots Artist of the Year. His latest CD, Lennie Gallant Live, won him these awards. A mix of old and original material, the recording received lots of great press and is selling very well. During the ECMAs Lennie shared some tips on songwriting with other musicians at the SOCAN Songwriters Circle. As well as touring to promote his new CD, Lennie has been working on a number of projects. He performed in a documentary on Dr. Helen Creighton. His song "Island Clay" appears in a the history of PEI, "If You're Stronghearted: Prince Edward Island in the Twentieth Century." Lennie is also working on his first French album. His background is Acadian and Acadian friends have been asking him to release a French recording for years. Though he has always included French songs on his past CD's, this will be his first full-length French album. His will be touring for most of Spring and Summer 2001. Teresa Doyle - Children's Artist of the Year. Teresa Doyle lives a life of sharp contrasts: running a thoroughly modern music business-with all that entails-from her home, a small organic farm in Bellevue, where she lives with her husband, Brett and son, Patrick. The winner of the 2001 ECMA award for best children's recording artist, Doyle likes to think of her current album, Cradle on the Waves, 1998's If fish could sing..., and Dance to Your Daddy-winner of the same award at the 1997 ECMAs-as "children's music for all ages." All three recordings feature Celtic flavored music performed by Doyle and a fine selection of like-minded musicians. As a sixth-generation Islander, Doyle's interests have often led her not only to seek out and perform traditional PEI folk songs, but to base her own compositions on people and stories discovered through her research into Island history and folklore. Her 1987 release Prince Edward Isle Adieu, 1991's Forerunner and 1993's Stowaway are seamless mixes of traditional songs and her own. Not one to be categorized, though, Doyle's varied musical interests have led her to perform jazz as well as traditional folk tunes, and the children's recordings for which she is gaining renown. In 1994, Doyle and Japanese lute player Toshizo Tanaka recorded a collection of Renaissance ballads, Songs for Lute and Voice. All of Doyle's recordings are available from her homegrown label, Bedlam. Doyle's adventures in music frequently take her far from home. She's toured Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as throughout North America. Within the next few months, she will be traveling to Mexico; March sees her back for the Juno Awards, in Hamilton, where Cradle on the Waves has been nominated as the best children's album. Then, in the spring, Doyle is off to Dublin for a voice workshop. However, no matter how far afield she may travel and what musical forays she might make, Teresa Doyle and her music are rooted deeply in the traditions and history of Prince Edward Island.

The Jive Kings - Jazz Artist/Group of the Year. For the second year in a row Prince Edward Island's Jive Kings have won the East Coast Music Award for Jazz Artist/Group of the Year. The 2001 award was based on the music presented in their recently released CD The Jive Kings with Measha Brüggergosman, which is a recording of their performance last summer at The Indian River Festival at St. Mary's Church. Bob Nicholson commented on behalf of the group: "We were excited and pleased to win the award in our hometown, in Charlottetown. And we were very thankful for the opportunities to perform during ECMA weekend." The Jive Kings' members are Mike Ross, Bob Nicholson, Dan Warren, Ian Sherwood, Barrie Sorensen, Perry Williams, Alan Dowling, Darryl Gallant. Check their website at www.jivekings.com.
