Band News
Congratulations to students in the band program for a great first concert on October 29. Much preparation went into getting ready for a concert very early in the year. Thanks for all your efforts. The next performance for the entire band program will be this year’s Christmas concert which is scheduled for TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9 at 7:30 PM in the school gym. Please make note of the date and time, as it is incorrect in the school calendar.
Remembrance Day Ceremonies
The grade 9 band will be performing at the REMEMBRANCE DAY ceremonies here at the school on Monday and again on Tuesday morning. They will need to take their band uniform to school on Monday (please make sure pants are black). Tuesday’s performance is for the Kingston Legion and will be held at the Legion Hall in New Haven on the Trans-Canada Highway just before you get to Gass’s store. Grade 9 band students are to be at the Kingston Legion by 10:15 AM on REMEMBRANCE DAY, wearing their band uniform and WARM outdoor clothing (including winter boots, hat and mitts). The ceremony will be held outside unless the weather is bad. That decision is usually not made until about 10:00 AM, so students need to come prepared for either possibility. Mr. Nabuurs will be taking a bus from the school to the LEGION to carry music stands and percussion gear and to use as a place to set-up and warm up. He could use some help with loading the bus at East Wiltshire at 9:30 AM on REMEMBRANCE DAY morning and with the unloading after the ceremony is finished.. Thank you for your help with this very worthwhile performance!!!
Communicating Band Information to Parents
Mr. Nabuurs tries to keep band parents up to date about band activities by email and, now, through a special page on the school web site. You can be added to his group emails any time by sending an email with your son’s or daughter’s first and last name and grade level to
fanabuurs@edu.pe.ca. You can also check out the latest information on the East Wiltshire SCHOOL WEB PAGE by clicking the band icon.Girls’ Soccer
A huge congratulations goes out to the East Wiltshire GIRLS’ SOCCER TEAM for taking home the banner. The PROVINCIAL CHAMPS defeated Queen Charlotte in the GOLD MEDAL game 2-0 on Saturday. The girls had an amazing season and fought hard for a well-deserved happy ending. Way to go, girls! Thanks for all your hard work.....
Girls’ Field Hockey
The FIELD HOCKEY TEAM put in a wonderful effort, in what was a huge rebuilding year for these girls. They ended the year with a BRONZE MEDAL, in a season that saw them all improve and pull together as a team. Special thanks to all the parents who pitched in to help out and to the coaches, Amy Scales and Kellie Deacon. Good luck in the future to all the graduating grade nine players!!!
Student Council
Student Council’s first dance was a great success. Thank you to everyone for help with decorating and organizing the event. We are planning a movie night for Nov. 27th, so come and kick back with some popcorn and enjoy a fun show with your friends. Students should talk to their class reps to get more information.
Library News
It’s been a busy month in the Library. Thank you very much to everyone who helped out with the Book Fair. Scholastic has given us over $800.00 in books as our profit and we’ve already purchased many of the popular books from the Book Fair itself.
A special thank you to Amy Kern Day who is volunteering in the Library on Fridays this year.
Island author Yvette Doucette
visited EWS in October and held a writing workshop with Ms. Palmer’s two Grade 9 Language Arts groups. The workshops went well and Ms. Doucette is now working with students from those classes on writing to be submitted for the Island Literary Awards in the spring. Our Million Minute Challenge was very successful this year. Our students read for over 89,000 minutes On Monday, October 27. It worked out to 159 minutes of reading per student. Congratulations to all the students for participating.
On November 17, award winning author Cora Taylor is visiting EWS. Ms. Taylor is a successful Canadian author with a long list of books to her credit. Sixty students will be at her presentation in which she will speak about writing and the writing process. We would like to thank Barb Kissick, Youth Services Librarian for the Provincial Library Service for making this visit possible.
Lego League
We had 16 students participate in the Lego League during the month of October. It was a wonderful experience for all those who participated and parents and students enjoyed viewing the final pieces. Thank you to Owl’s Hollow and John Eldon and Mary Green for sponsoring the event.
The students have shown an interest in continuing with a Lego Club in the future. If anyone has Lego at home that is no longer in use and would like to donate it, we would gratefully accept it.
Games Room
We're in the process of starting up the games room here at E.W.S. and we're still looking for some games and equipment: for example, weights, air-hockey and pool tables or any other games or equipment anyone may have lying around their house that they're not using anymore, which is still in good working order!
Food Bank
The FOOD BANK would like to extend its thanks and appreciation to the generous people of Cornwall and area, for your donations and for those who helped make this year’s FOOD DRIVE a success. Thank you all.

Healthy Eating Tips for the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance
Orange and Green Vegetables
Canada’s Food Guide
recommends eating at least one dark green and one orange vegetable each day. Vegetables are an excellent source of many nutrients. Dark green and orange vegetables are great sources of folate and vitamin A. Folate is a nutrient that has been linked to decreased risk of heart disease, cancer, and neural tube defects, while vitamin A can help with your eye sight, boost your immune system, and keeps your skin, bones, and teeth healthy. Eating a diet with adequate amounts of folate and vitamin A will contribute to your overall health!Examples of orange vegetables:
carrots
pumpkins
orange colored squash
sweet potatoes
Examples of dark green vegetables:
broccoli
romaine lettuce
spinach
green Peas
Sweet Potato Fries
1 lb sweet potatoes washed and cut into wedges
2 tsp vegetable oil
1/4 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp black pepper
Place potatoes in a bowl. Add oil, paprika and garlic powder. Season to taste with pepper. Toss to coat. Transfer to baking sheet. Bake at 375 F for 25 minutes or until tender and golden brown, turning once.

NOTICE TO PARENTS
SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS
If all schools are to be canceled, parents will be notified by radio announcements on local stations including
Magic 93, CFCY, OCEAN, K-ROCK, CBC-FM (CBC PEI’s Stormwatch), Cl02, and Bonjour Atlantique that all schools in the Eastern School District are closed.
The first notice will be broadcast by 7:00 a.m. Sometimes it may only be necessary to close individual or families of schools. Please refer to the following list of families of schools.
ONE HOUR DELAY
In cases where a decision cannot be made by 7:00 a.m., a one-hour delay will be announced. This means that all schools and buses may operate one hour later than the usual time.
A further announcement regarding delays and/or cancellations will take place by 8:00 a.m.
LATE BUS RUNS
In some instances, even in good weather, buses may be delayed. In these cases, parents will be notified by radio that a bus or buses will be delayed by a specific amount of time.
For example, if a bus is delayed 30 minutes, students can expect to meet the bus 30 minutes later than would normally be the case.
SCHOOL CLOSURE DURING THE DAY
Sometimes, it may be necessary to close individual or families of schools during the day to get children home before weather conditions become too severe. In such cases, announcements will be made on all radio stations.
PARENTS WHO WILL NOT BE AT HOME WHEN CHILDREN ARRIVE SHOULD MAKE ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN ON SUCH DAYS. PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF THESE CHANGES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS
1. Please listen to the radio between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to determine if schools are operating.
2. Please DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE or the RADIO STATIONS for information, as this overloads the telephone lines that are often in emergency use.
3. Do not drop children off at school unless you are certain that school is operating that day.
4. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN IN CASE OF MIDDAY SCHOOL CLOSURES.
5. IF SCHOOLS ARE OPERATING, THE FINAL DECISION TO ATTEND RESTS WITH YOU THE PARENT.
Together we can work to ensure a safe winter for all our children.
