Literacy at EWS

7A and 7G are currently working on Chapter 13 in Social Studies which covers the topic of Women and Social Reform.  Instead of working out of the text book, students are using the internet to complete the chapter.  This allows students to find definitions, information on different unions/institutes, how certain women made a difference and when they finally received the right to vote.  Students are enjoying the opportunity to research and discover information on their terms with the help of the computer.

Ms. MacKinley-Curran would like recognize the students of class 7F and class 7B for their hard work and dedication this year in creative writing. Many of these students will be entering a selection of their writing in the Island Literary Awards contest in June.

7A and 7H have been writing about the affects of technology on their families.  Recently, 7A discussed their answers to this question:  How are changes in technology affecting your family?  Overwhelmingly the class reported that they feel technology usage has had a negative effect.  Some of their reasons are less time spent outside, difficult to pull themselves away from games and computer sites, and the focus is on technology rather than communicating with the people in the room.  We are continuing the conversation.  Our next question:  What changes can you make to control the use of technology?

Library Monitor Selection: The Library Monitors held a bake sale to raise funds for a “Library Monitor Selection” for the Library.  This is a selection of books that they chose for the Library that will be labeled accordingly.  The school matched their fund-raising, and they were able to provide the Library with 19 Library Monitor Selection Books.

Video Lunch: Thank you to Tessa Craig and Layne MacEachern for the time and energy put into our first Video Lunch.  Tessa and Layne created a playlist with input from student council representatives and then monitored the showing of the videos during both lunches.  The Video lunch was a success and we hope to do it again in the future!

EWS Rappers! Mr. MacAdam’s 9G students were asked to prepare presentations in Science on the topic of Cell Division.  Two of the students, Maddie MacCannell and Vanessa Hennessey created “The Vocabulary Rap Checklist”, which highlights their rapping skills as well as their understanding of their Science vocabulary.  They spent some time planning, videoing and editing their performance and their hard work paid off.  “The Vocabulary Rap Checklist” is fun, fast and fabulous!

Student Council News

EWS Days: Thank you to everyone for participating in EWS Days.  We had our video lunch, we went to the Bluefield musical, “Footloose”, we enjoyed Ian Stewart’s Hypnotist show, and we had a fun dance. We even had a King and Queen on Friday, April 20th: Cynthia Young and Noah Woodworth were the lucky winners of that raffle! Thank you to all the students and teachers for being involved and helping out.

Final Dance:  Our final dance of the year will be Thursday, June 7th.  The theme is “A Night in Paris”.  This dance is for Grade 8 & 9 only as we celebrate the last dance for our Grade 9 students.

CWF - Get to Know Contest

The 2012 CWF Get to Know Contest has now launched! Founded by beloved educator and artist Robert Bateman, the Get to Know Contest has been encouraging Canadian youth to get outdoors and be inspired by their wild neighbours for over 13 years! Mr. Bateman’s belief is that “getting to know our neighbours of other species begins right in our own backyard”, so children are encouraged to submit original works of art, writing, photography, video or music inspired by the biodiversity in their own communities.

Our contest this year has an exciting whale watching excursion prize which includes a trip for four to Sidney, B.C for marine inspired artwork. Students have the opportunity to win great prizes, including having their entry published in the 2013 CWF Get to Know Contest Calendar, the opportunity to attend a week long “Get to Know Art and Nature Camp” supported by Parks Canada and a ton of other great prizes from our partners!

For more information go to www.gettoknow.ca  Contest runs from April 8th – July 16th and is for Youth 19 and under.

Healthy Eating Tips from the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance May 2012

Lively Legumes

Legumes are dried beans, peas and lentils; they fall into the Meat and Alternative group in Canada’s Food Guide.  Legumes are excellent sources of protein and fibre while being very low in saturated fat.  For these reasons, it’s recommended to include legumes often when planning your family meals.

Legumes can be found dried or canned.  Dried legumes take longer to prepare but are less expensive than the canned versions.  When using canned legumes be sure to drain and rinse well to reduce sodium.

Not only are legumes healthy, but they are also inexpensive and easy to use!  Challenge your family to have a meatless meal at least once a week.  This is a good way to introduce meat alternatives to your kids and save money at the same time.  When introducing legumes to your family for the first time, have fun!  Start by adding them to family favourite dishes so your children will get used to the texture slowly, eventually make them the star of the dish!

Below are some ideas on how to include legumes into your family’s favourites:

Add lentils to spaghetti sauce
Make chili with kidney beans
Replace mayonnaise with hummus as a spread on sandwiches
Add a layer of refried beans on tacos
Use chickpeas on salads

Hummus

1 can     Chick peas, drained, rinsed

¼ cup     Lemon juice, fresh

¼ cup     Tahini

2 cloves Garlic, chopped

2 tsp     Extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp     Parsley, fresh, chopped

Garnish  Paprika

Directions:

  1. Place chick peas, lemon juice, tahini, garlic oil and parsley in a food    processor.  Blend to desired consistency.
  2. Add a bit of water to smooth consistency if desired.
  3. Garnish with paprika.
