We offer a wide range of activities that provides an opportunity for everyone to have a fun and valuable experience to complement the incredible learning that will take place. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many different aspects of school life at East Wiltshire and to make this your best year yet. Parents and guardians should feel welcome to contact the school at anytime, and we will do our best to make everyone feel that they are a part of a great school community.
Page 5
General Expectations
Students are expected to:
Conduct themselves in a responsible manner at all times, inside and outside the school, showing courtesy and respect for their fellow students and staff.
Keep their lockers, textbooks, workbooks, notebooks, desks, and all other property belonging to them or the school in a tidy and clean condition
Have all necessary textbooks, etc., to participate in their classes and all assigned work completed on time.
Keep the washrooms neat and tidy, respecting the rights of other students using these facilities.
Come to school clean and with a manner of dress suited to a school environment.
Maintain an academic standard appropriate to their ability.
At East Wiltshire Intermediate school the staff respects the rights of the students to have access to the best quality education possible. In return, the staff asks the students to accept their role in the responsibility in the learning process.

Page 7
Extra-curricular Activities
E.W.S. offers a combination of club and interscholastic team activities which are run before or after school. Both involved competition as well as skill development. The clubs involve unlimited numbers to maximize participation opportunities for all students. The clubs and teams offered here may be changed from year to year in order to provide a well-balanced variety. Involvement in these areas will greatly add to a student’s school year. When participating in any extra-curricular activity, all rules of the school apply and, in addition, students are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship, fair play, and respect. When students represent E.W.S. in any activity with another school or before the public, they must always remember that they are goodwill ambassadors for the school and must act appropriately. East Wiltshire staff volunteer their time for these clubs. The following are some of the clubs available to our students:
Peer Helpers Writing Club
Student Council Spelling Bee
Yearbook Duke Of Edinburgh
Library Monitors Running/Walking Club
Boxing Club Leadership
Yoga Wrestling Club
Page 8
Public Health
A public health nurse will be available at our school half a day a week. Parents are encouraged to contact the public health nurse if they have any concerns related to the School Health Programs offered by Public Health Nursing. The public health nurse accepts referrals from students parents and teachers.
Immunizations are given in the school, with parental consent and according to the provincial immunization schedule as directed by the Chief Health Officer. Consent forms are sent home in advance of all immunization clinics scheduled in the school. The public health nurse may assist teachers in carrying out the Family Life Program as agreed upon by the Department of Health & Education.
High Energy Drinks School Policy
After consultation with Eastern School District principals, effective immediately, schools in the Eastern School District will prohibit the consumption of high energy drinks on school board property. These drinks such as Red Bull, Full Throttle, Venom, Adrenaline Rush, Rock Star, etc., are designed for adult use, and according to the PEI Medical Association are unsafe for student consumption, potentially causing dizziness, increased blood pressure, heart irregularity and addiction.
Page 9
Peanut-Nut Free School Policy
This year, several students in our school have severe, life-threatening allergies to peanut butter, peanuts, and nut containing products. A recent review of our procedures was conducted by Health & Social Services Department and it was recommended that our school implement a voluntary peanut-free policy. This policy, as outlined in the Minister’s Directive - Procedures for Dealing with life-Threatening Allergies will ensure East Wiltshire Intermediate becomes as safe an environment as possible for these students.
East Wiltshire Intermediate will be expanding its peanut and nut alert zones to include the entire school. Because all students travel throughout the building to specialist classes, assemblies, etc., the only way to provide the safest environment is to exclude all peanut and other nut products from lunches and snacks.
Everyone’s cooperation in helping our school be a save environment for all students is much appreciated.
Scent Free
Many students and staff are sensitive to or allergic to strongly scented personal grooming products. In accordance with the Eastern School District’s policy, please refrain from wearing scented products both in school and on the busses, in order to maintain a healthy environment for all.
Page 10SAS - StudentAchieve
Students Achieve is an online software that provides the ability to view student attendance and marks which allows both parents and students to track progress more effectively. Parents and student s each have a unique user id and password to access Students Achieve.
All homeroom teachers enter attendance at the earliest opportunity. Delays in entering attendance information are expected when a teacher is absent from school or unable to enter attendance for other reasons. Parents are strongly encouraged to provide some form of communication with the school when a student is absent or going to be absent. The preferred methods are a phone call (368-4130 press 227) or a written note upon the student’s return to class.
Many teachers currently use Students Achieve to record and manage marks, and many provide access to their marks using this system.
Typically, updates to the Students Achieve website will not be available during exam period.
Parents can maintain their own e-mail address information by logging into Students Achieve. If an email address changes, you may change it yourself with Students Achieve account. You may receive mass e-mails from East Wiltshire School
(www.edu.pe.ca/eastwiltshire/) (If you do not receive any emails) from the above website, please add our e-mail account to your list of approved senders. You may also receive e-mails from your student’s teachers. We work with one parent email address per family. If we do not currently have one for your family, please contact us at 368-4130 Ext 225.Page 10B
Homework
Students are expected to complete their homework on a regular day-to-day basis. This is a very important step toward their academic success. Students are expected to phone a classmate to learn of their assignments. In the event of an extended illness, arrangements can be made through the office to receive work missed.
Student agenda planners are provided to students in grade 7 to assist them with their organization. These serve as a valuable tool in the success of the student and, in particular, with completing homework and meeting due dates for assignments and projects.
Attendance
Regular attendance is important. Poor attendance often hinders the academic progress of students. We ask that all parents make sure that their student attend regularly. All absentees, late arrivals or homework request calls can be reported to our Youth Worker, Robbie McEntee, at 368-4130 ext 227, no later than 9:30 am.
Page 11
Promotional Requirements
Our school year consists of three reporting periods, term one ending on December 4th, reporting period 2 ending on March 12th , and reporting period three ending on June 25th. At the end of each reporting period students receive a report card indicating their progress to date. A pass in individual subjects is fifty percent; however, students are encouraged to strive for as high an average as they can. Meeting the minimum standard will make it more difficult to achieve success the following year.
In order to be promoted to the next grade, a student must pass all subjects and obtain a combined average of at least sixty percent in all subject areas - academic, and specialists.
A student who has not met the schools expectations for promotion may, for a variety of reasons, be placed in the next grade.
At the grade nine level, students who do not achieve at least seventy* percent in English, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies should not consider registering for academic courses in these subjects in Grade Ten, as they will not have the skills to necessary to be successful at that level.
At the end of the school year East Wiltshire has a grade nine closing and a grade nine class day trip. Participation in these events is restricted to students who have been in regular attendance during the school year.
Page 12
Grade nine students who have successfully met
the promotion standards receive a certificated at the end of the year. The three types of certificates presented are: High Honours - students who attain a combined average in all subject areas of at least 90% with no subject less than 80%; Honours - a combined average in all subject areas of at least 85% with no subject mark less than 70%; Promotion Certificate - has achieved the promotion standards for grade nine: a combined average of at least 60% with no subject mark less than 50%. * as prescribed by Bluefield High School.Program Adaptation
Program adaptation is a process which allows a student with special needs to participate in a prescribed curriculum (course with changes in format, instructional strategies and/or assessment procedures that do not change the learning outcomes of the curriculum. Full credit will be granted for such courses, but adaptations used, must be documented on the student’s file and or/transcript.
Program Modification
Program modification is a process which changes the prescribed curriculum to meet a student’s special needs. Modified courses do not provide the same credit as prescribed course. Details of the modified courses must be included in the student’s file and the transcript should indicate that the course has been modified. Students that are in a modified program cannot be promoted, but will be placed at the appropriate level.

East Wiltshire Hockey Academy
The staff, students and community of East Wiltshire school are very excited about offering a Hockey Canada Skills Academy at our school, again this Fall - 2010. This program will be offered to a maximum of 30 skaters and four goaltenders and will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4:00 pm and possibly some Friday mornings from 7:15 am - 8:15 am., beginning in October and ending in March, for a total of 24 weeks. The Hockey Canada Skills program will be open to all students (male or female), as well as beginning players and advanced players. The program is intended for student-athletes who want to improve their fitness levels and playing abilities through skills specific training. For some of our students they will be introduced to the sport for the first time, while others will have an opportunity to possibly re-enter a sport they have left for various reasons, and finally our experienced players will receive enhanced training and instruction. Our research has shown that this type of program is a successful environment to engage youth at risk.
Our students will be exposed to important developmental skills of the game along with gaining valuable experiences in the areas of leadership, goal-setting, self-esteem, character development, nutrition and fitness. The objective of the East Wiltshire Hockey Canada Skills Program is to provide students with opportunities to receive formalized hockey training in an academic setting with a strong commitment to achievement in both areas. It is our belief that students participating in this program will benefit in many ways. These students will:
Page 14
R
eceive outstanding hockey instruction from trained and certified teachers, experienced instructions, university and tier two players;Improve their hockey skills and physical fitness levels through exposure to a wide range of on-ice and off-ice activities;
B
e educated and fully aware of the importance of developing strong character and work ethic;Become more engaged in student learning and improve performance in the classroom;
Be more physical active and gain an appreciation for physical activity through participation in sport.
Being able to offer a program in an academic setting with the above stated benefits is exciting for both our school and our community at large. We look forward again to partnering with Hockey Canada, Hockey PEI., North River Minor Hockey Association and the Eastern School District to make the East Wilshire Hockey Canada Skills Program successful.
Page 15Home & School
The East Wiltshire Home & School Association invites all parents to become involved in their Association. The association meets 4-5 times per year, beginning in October. Meetings usually begin at 7:00 pm. The Home & School deals with issues related to the supporting of students, staff and the administration in order to improve the learning opportunities for students. Notice of all meetings will be posted in our monthly newsletter as well as
e-mailed to all parents. The role of the Association within the school community is constantly evolving. We invite you to become involved.
The Caring Places to Learn Policy
The Eastern School District’s Caring Places to Learn Policy is a comprehensive policy designed to ensure that schools in the Eastern District provide a healthy, safe, and supportive working and learning environment for every student and staff member. The Caring Places to Learn policy is an "umbrella"policy which supports each school’s own policies and practices in this area.
Countless personal interactions occur in Eastern District Schools every day, and these interactions are the focus of this policy. The policy guides the way people in our school communities treat each other, and ensure that the expectations for behaviours for all members of the school community are similar: that we will demonstrate regard, concern, and respect for each other in all our interactions – both inside and outside the
Page 16
classroom – and that we will respect the unique differences and worth of every individual.
Achieving and maintaining this positive climate is the responsibility of everyone involved in education in Eastern District schools – students, parents, teachers, support staff, and trustees. There are expectations for all members of school communities, and these expectations are met and exceeded daily on a regular basis. We continually strive to make sure that our schools are inclusive, supportive, and healthy for all.
The Caring Places to Learn policy covers such specific areas of verbal abuse, violence, bullying, discrimination, sexual abuse, threats, trespassing, and weapons. Within these areas, the policy dictates what steps should be taken when allegations of violations of this policy are made. These allegations may involve student to student incidents, student to staff incidents, staff to students incidents, and staff to staff incidents.
Parents in particular are encouraged to inform us immediately about situations which would negatively affect the school’s healthy and supportive environment. Sometimes parents are reluctant to contact the school when students may be having a difficult time with a situation, and the situation worsens. We can’t guarantee that we can "fix" every situation, but if the school knows about problems early, we can often take steps to prevent the problem from becoming worse.
Parents are encouraged to become involved with their school to help maintain its safe and caring atmosphere. It’s a responsibility of the entire school community.
Page 17Daily Routines
At 8:50 a.m., and at the end of lunch hour, students should proceed immediately to their lockers to get the books needed for classes they will have for that half day. They are then to go directly to class.
Students arriving at school before 8:45 a.m., are to proceed immediately to the cafeteria/foyer until permitted to proceed to their lockers at 8:45 am. Upon arrival on the property in the morning, students are to enter the building through the main doors.
Students who are late for school must report to the office to sign in before going to class.
When changing classrooms or going to the library, students should proceed quickly and quietly.
Students out of class during regular class times must have a note from their teacher indicating the purpose of their absence from class.
When a student has an appointment or must leave during the school day, the main office must receive written or phone permission from the student’s parent/guardian. Bus students are not permitted to leave school property at noontime on most days unless accompanied by a parent or parent designate. Grade 8 & 9 students may leave school property on their double lunch noon hour, if they have had the LEAVING SCHOOL PROPERTY consent form signed by their parents/guardians. The student must sign out in home room on the class list provided by the home-room teacher.
At lunchtime, students are to eat in the cafeteria. When buying food, students are requested to line up in
a single file. When finished eating, they are to make sure that they have cleaned up so others can use the area after them. NO FOOD OR DRINK IS PERMITTED OUTSIDE THE CAFETERIA EXCEPT UNDER SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES.Double lunchtime, students are not to be in the classroom areas of the school. This includes not being outside in the eastern half of the school grounds. This is important as classes are in progress during both lunch periods.
Students who have a driver’s license and wish to bring their vehicle to school must first meet with the principal and abide by the guidelines set out by the principal.
Students are only permitted to be at the school following afternoon bus departure if they are involved in a staff-supervised activity or with the permission of the administration.

These regulations apply both during the day and for extra-curricular activities.
You must travel on the bus that you have been assigned to unless you have a bus transfer permission slip from the school administrator.
Violation of any of the above regulations may result in your losing the privilege of travelling on the bus for a period of time.
BUS TRANSFER
Students occasionally wish to travel on a bus other than their own. This request must come to the main office from the parent/guardian, in writing. The student is to put the bus note in the main office’s bus note box first thing in the morning. Approved bus transfer slips may be picked up in the main office at the end of the school day. Bus transfer requests will be approved providing the following conditions permit:
a) Space is available on the school bus.
b) It does not require an additional bus stop.
c) No bus transfers on dance days.
SCHOOL CLOSURE
School Cancellation: If schools are to be cancelled, parents will be notified by radio announcements on all local stations. The first notice will be broadcast by 7:00 am.
Page 24
One Hour Delay
: In cases where a decision cannot be made by 8:00 a.m., a one-hour delay will be announced. This means that all schools and busses will operate an hour later than the usual time. A further announcement regarding delays will take place by 8:00 a.m.Late Bus Runs: In some instances even in good weather, buses may be delayed. In these cases, parents will be notified by radio that a bus or buses will be delayed by a specific amount of time.
School Closure During The Day: In some instances, it is necessary to close schools during the day in order to get students home before weather conditions become too severe. In such cases, announcements will be made on all local radio stations. Parents who will not be home when students arrive should make alternate arrangements for their students on such days.
Page 25
GENERAL INFORMATION
Injury or Sickness
- Students who become ill during the school day are to report to the office. If the illness is severe, parents/guardians will be contacted and asked to come to the school for the student. If the student is not sick enough to go home, then they are to return to class. Students are not allowed to loiter in the washroom if they are ill. Students loitering in the washroom will be considered skipping. In cases of serious injury, an attempt will be made immediately to have the student receive medical attention. We will attempt to contact a parent/guardian. Our school is not equipped to care for students who are seriously ill.Visitors
- All visitors to the school property during the school day must report to the main office.Telephone -
The phone located in the lobby is for student use and may be used at lunch time or during the day with teachers’ permission. The phone in the main office may be used only when students have the permission of an administrator. Incoming messages from parents will be forwarded to students as soon as possible.Assignments
- Completion dates of assignments and values are at the discretion of the individual teachers.Textbooks - Textbooks will be provided for the appropriate subject areas. Students must accept full financial responsibility for damage or loss of provided textbooks or materials.
Lockers
- Every student will be provided with an individual locker. Students will be provided with a lock
Page 26
for their locker and must use a school lock. In the interest of safety, locker doors must be closed when not in use. Student lockers are the property of the school. From time to time, locker searches may be carried out by the administration to ensure that proper use is being made of the lockers.
Library -
The library offers an excellent opportunity for students to support their classroom studies by using additional materials to enhance their learning activities. The room is there to provide students with a quiet place to work and study. The book loan period is two weeks. Lost books must be paid for or replaced by the student. In addition to a wide variety of reading materials, the library now offers a limited number of computers available for students’ use during lunch hour. Students are required to sign in and are expected to respect and follow regulations regarding use of computers within our school. If not, their use may/will be denied.Report Cards
- Report cards will be sent out December, March and June. Students must have paid all their debts to the school and returned all materials in order to receive their final report card/certification.Lost and Found
- The East Wiltshire school staff cannot be held responsible for money or other items of value that a student may bring to school. For this reason, a good rule to follow is as follows: If you can’t afford to lose it, leave it at home. During physical education classes, all valuables are to be left with the physical education teacher or locked in a gym locker. Students should bring a lock during the gym period or during intramurals. The general office maintains a "lost and found" where students can check for the recovery of lost items.
Page 27
Elevator Use
- East Wiltshire School is fortunate to have an elevator. The elevator is designed for use by students and staff who are in need of physical assistance. Students must receive staff permission in order to use the elevator.Student Council
- Each class will be asked to choose one student to represent them on the student council. The student council acts as the student voice in the initiation and development of student activities. The executive will consist of a president and vice-president (elected from the grade nine class) and a secretary (from grade 8). Election of the executive will take place early in the school year.School Counsellor
- Counselling services are provided to assist students to get maximum benefit and satisfaction from their years in this school. It may require no more than placement in a program best suited to their needs or it may involve helping you make necessary choices or decisions whether it be personal, educational, social or vocational. We encourage students and their parents to access the services of our school counsellor when and if necessary.Multi-Agency Support Team (M.A.S.T.)
E.W.S is fortunate to have a MAST team available to the students and their parents/guardians as a support for the school counsellor and administration. Representatives from Community Mental Health, Child and Family Services, Community Services and the Attorney General, as well as other agencies when required and available, meet at the school on a bi-weekly basis to provide support and information for the school community. Referrals are confidential. We have had many positive outcomes from this team and value the role it plays in the success of our students.
Page 28
Physical Education
The Physical Education program encompasses both individual and group activities. Students must be changed into appropriate clothing for physical education. Students are allowed to wear shorts and a T-shirt or sweat pants and sweat shirts. Students’ stomach and undergarments must not be visible. All students must have sneakers. Some sneaker with dark soles are not acceptable, as they mark the gym floor. Please inquire if sneakers mark before purchasing new ones.
Something for everyone:
Noontime intramurals complement the school’s physical education program by providing opportunities for students to participate in a wide range of carefully-selected activities applying the skills learned in physical education class.Alternate Programs
East Wiltshire is fortunate to be able to offer programs in early and late French Immersion and Instrumental Band. Scheduling of classes in our school is very dependant on knowing how many students are in each of these programs. Therefore, students who are accepted into any of these programs must remain in the program for the full school year.
Page 29

Hats are not to be worn in school during school hours except when authorized by the administration. Students found to be wearing hats may have them confiscated for a period of time.
Skateboards are not to be used on school property during the school day. If students bring skateboards to school, the skateboard is to be put immediately in their locker for the entire school day. Students in possession of a skateboard during the school day will have them confiscated for a period of time.
M3 players, I-Pods, cell phones, and other electronic devices are not permitted to be used in classroom areas of the school, in accordance with the Eastern District policy regarding such devices. Respect for the individual rights and privacy of the students and staff is of utmost importance in our school. The staff and administration reserve the right to confiscate any and all devices from students who do not respect this policy.
Students are not to engage in acts of physical affection that are considered to be unacceptable in a school setting.
Throwing snowballs is a potentially dangerous activity. Students will be subject to disciplinary action if they engage in this behaviour.

Expectations
previously identified or engaging in unacceptable behaviours as listed in the Eastern District’s Caring Places to learn policy will result in disciplinary action. Parents will be held accountable to the same rules and expectations of our students.Discipline Procedures
Most discipline problems will be minor in nature and will be handled immediately by the staff members involved. Some discipline problems will be referred to the principal or a vice-principal. The administration will talk to the student, teacher and other appropriate persons, and will then communicate the school’s decision to both student, teachers and where appropriate, the parent/guardian.
The disciplinary action taken depends on the severity and frequency of the offence(s). Some possible consequences of misbehaviour may include but are not limited to: a warning, noon or after school detention, parent/guardian contact, work that the student must complete, interviews with parents/guardians and the student, suspension from a class, suspension from extra curricular activities or suspension from school for a period of time. Students under suspension are not permitted to attend any school -sponsored activity on the day (s) of the suspension.
Bystanders - We believe that people have a responsibility to demonstrate good citizenship.
Bystanders who:
1) help to arrange a meeting between two people for the purpose of fighting, and/or
2) watch a fight as part of a circle will be held accountable and could face serious consequences.
Page 33
Students who fail to comply with the discipline measures determined by teachers or the administration will be subject to suspension from school. When a student has been suspended for a period of time from class(es), school or from school activities, parents will be notified. A follow-up letter will be sent home explaining the reason for the suspension and the length and type of suspension.
Dance Rules
The dress code for school dances is the same as the school dress code.
Students are expected to abide by rules and decisions made by the staff and chaperones
If, for some reason, a student will be late, they should see a vice-principal or the principal beforehand. Once students leave the dance, they will not be permitted to return.
There is to be
NO alcohol or drug use. Any students who violate this rule will face a school suspension. Also, they will not be permitted to attend any school dances for a period of time to be determined by the administration. No bus transfers on the day of a school dance will be permitted.
No kit bags will be permitted at the school dance.
Lockers will not be accessible during the school dances.
Students will not be permitted to smoke anywhere on school property.
Page 34
In order to attend a dance, the student must attend school that day. Students suspended from school since the previous dance may not be permitted to attend the next dance.
School dances are restricted to E.W.S. students only.
Attendance at school dances is a privilege, not a right. Administration reserves the right to make the decision if a student is in violation of the school rules, which may result in a year suspension of all dances and school activities.
NOTE:
Any person who is believed to be in violation of the Alcohol/Drug Rules or who is in a serious break of other E.W.S. dance rules, will be requested to call their parents/guardians to advise them that they are being removed from school property. In cases where the law has been broken, the school authorities may request the policy to deal with the situation.

Dress Code
After much deliberation, taking into account the changing fashion trends, and what is appropriate in a school setting. The following regulations will be in effect at this school:
Student clothing cannot depict messages, whether written or in picture form, which are profane, demeaning or promote illegal or immoral activity, or promote the use of alcohol or drugs.
Students should not wear outdoor clothing (e.g., jackets, boots) to class for health reasons. These should be kept in the students’ lockers until dismissal. Students should have a pair of shoes to be worn indoors only. (Note: can be gym shoes.) Shoes or sneakers are to be worn while the student is in school for their protection and safety.
Students’ shorts/dresses are not to have slits above mid-thigh and are not to be shorter than finger tip length when the student stands comfortably straight. Pants are not to have holes or slits in them above mid-thigh level and must cover their hips. We also ask that the students’ stomachs be covered and that no "muscle" shirts or spaghetti-strap tops be worn. Undergarments must not be visible. The administration reserves the right to judge appropriateness of clothing and to request that students change or dress in a more suitable manner.
Body piercing is permitted upon approval of administration.
