School Procedures SCHOOL HOURS 8:30 a.m. - doors open SIX-DAY CYCLE Like the other schools in the Eastern School District, Eliot River operates on a six-day cycle. This means that it is never Monday or Tuesday here, but rather Day Three or Day Four, depending on the week! We start with Day One, on September 3rd, and then continue with the cycle. After Day Six, it’s Day One again. On days when there is no school in the district, the day carries over to the next school day. But on days when there is school in most schools but not at Eliot River (like parent-teacher interviews), we skip the day. Confused? Don’t worry. We’ll try to keep you informed in newsletters what day of the cycle it happens to be. STUDENT ATTENDANCE Regular school attendance is an important factor in a student’s success. When your child is absent, please call the school in the morning so the teacher can be alerted. When requesting that school work be sent home, thank you for calling as early as possible (before noon, please) so that the teacher can have the time to prepare and/or collect materials from other teachers. EARLY ARRIVAL On occasion your child may have to arrive early at school. If children should arrive early, they are expected to wait outside until 8:30 a.m. At that time, doors will open and teacher supervision will begin. Otherwise we are asking that students not arrive at school prior to 8:30 a.m. SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS, DELAYS AND EARLY DISMISSALS Decisions to cancel or delay the opening of the school are made by the District Transportation Supervisor, after consultation with the high school principals and a number of bus drivers throughout the district. The high schools principals sometimes receive advice from feeder school principals. Normally, the first announcements is made at 7:00 a.m. Eliot River is a member of the Bluefield Family of Schools, but radio announcements will rarely mention Eliot River. Rather an announcement to delay or close will be made on a District or Family of Schools basis. Thus, when it is announced that the Bluefield Family or the Eastern School District schools are closed, parents/guardians should realize that Eliot River is closed as well. Decisions to close early because of unfit conditions are made at the school level in consultation with the other members in the school family. A radio announcement will be made prior to the children leaving the school. Where and when parents are absent from home, children should be made aware of where (usually a neighbour or relative) they should go in the event that the school is dismissed early because of storms, power failure, etc. Because of the number of students in the school we cannot have children calling to find out what to do or where to go. Children should come to school on the first day with their personal "emergency plan" in place. This relieves any anxiety about what they should do in the event of early closure. While it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that there is a safe place for their child(ren) to go upon dismissal from school, it has been the practice of the school to be of assistance to the children. This is one reason we request that the information sheet be completed and returned to the school. NUTRITION POLICY Eating properly is very important to help us in growing, learning, and playing. Parents, students, and teachers should work as a team to help develop positive attitudes and skills for healthy eating. Eliot River teaches proper nutrition as a part of the regular health curriculum, with the information based on Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Parents are encouraged to ensure that their children eat a good breakfast each day, as this helps us to learn, and also to help their children make good choices of snack and lunch foods to bring to school. Teachers encourage healthy eating practices in their classrooms. Students should not bring pop or other sugar-based beverages into the school. Milk and fruit juices are available at school on a daily basis. Student lunches should always feature a nutritious main course (sandwich, cheese and crackers, salad, etc.) and a dessert (fruit, puddings, etc.). Candy should not be included as a lunch item. Exceptions may be made for special holidays or classroom events. Our school has a number of students with food allergies, that may be life threatening. One of the most dangerous is an allergy to peanuts and products containing peanuts or peanut oils, etc. Reactions vary from mild (hives, runny nose, etc.) To dangerous (loss of consciousness, coma). It is suggested that all reactions should be taken very seriously and a teacher be made aware of the situation immediately. Everyone should become "peanut" and allergy educated for the safety of all students. YOUTH WORKER The Youth Worker (Stacey Nichols) will be providing many services at Eliot River School. *Specific educational
behavior management, social and life skill programs
In June, parents/guardians will be informed by their child’s teacher of the school’s recommended placement of their child. This recommendation will be based upon a number of factors. Normally, a student is expected to prove competence in one level before he/she will be allowed to proceed to the next level. In certain cases, however, social considerations dictate that a student move before he/she has exhibited that competence. Promotion will be on the discretion of the teacher(s) and Principal. CLASS ASSIGNMENT A great deal of time and thought goes into arranging classes for the following year. Many factors, including academic strengths and weaknesses, social and emotional needs, as well as, group dynamics are examined as the classes are arranged. What results is, we feel, the best possible combination for each student to experience a successful school year. Only under exceptional circumstances will we entertain requests for placement in certain classes. Please address your requests to Anita Murphy, Principal, or Donnie MacFayden, Vice-Principal CONSENT FORMS AND NOTES We regret being responsible for the seemingly endless number of consent forms and notes that the school requests, but we feel that these requests are justified for home communication and school board policy. Consent forms serve a definite purpose. They indicate parental approval for special events. The signed consent form is tangible proof that parents are aware of, and, in agreement with what is being done at the school. Notes or phone calls are required if a student is to leave school under special circumstances or if a parent wishes that special consideration be given to a particular student. The note ensures that teachers are familiar with the wishes of the parent. Notes or phone calls explaining student absences area courtesy to the homeroom teacher. On the practical side, they help ensure that students are absent from school with parent approval and help to make the teacher aware of problems which might affect student performance. PARKING LOT SAFETY The parking lot at Eliot River is a very busy place. Drivers of all vehicles are asked to exercise caution as they enter, drive through and exit. Please obey all directional signs. Thank you for driving carefully and keeping our school surroundings as safe as possible for all children.
