ELLERSLIE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Code Of Conduct
Dress Code:
Home and School in conjunction with the school parents and staff have adopted a student dress code for Ellerslie Elementary. Most students are dressing appropriately and need have no concern. The following are the guidelines to follow:
Any clothing that might be considered offensive (example: racial, sexual or profane) will not be permitted.
Clothing must meet front and back / top and bottom. (example: no bare midriffs, or backs showing, pants and tops to meet at waist.
Pants - not to be dragging on the floor - shoes in contact with the floor.
Shorts/dress - length must be at fingertips when arms are at your side.
Tops must have two arms and straps that are not of the "spaghetti" type.
Necklines are not to be revealing.
Backs and shoulders are to be covered (In addition to the above, any other clothing that may be considered inappropriate will be addressed on an individual basis).
Students are expected to be at school 8:50 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each and every day there are classes. When students are absent parents are asked to contact the teacher by 8:30 a.m. or send a note with the student the next day. If students arrive late they MUST sign in at the office before going to class and if they are leaving prior to 3:00 p.m. parents are asked to sign student(s) out at the office.
All students (Grade 1-6) will have homework. The time will vary depending on the grade and the students abilities. (Please contact your child's teacher for the particulars). All students are expected to be prepared for class by having pencil(s), eraser, scribbler(s), books, assignments, homework completed, etc, in class each day. Here are some ways in which you can help support your child:
2. Give your child much encouragement and praise.
3. Help your child study spellings on a weekly basis.
4. Encourage your child to re-read and review written work.
5. Set a time for homework in a quiet place.
6. To help your child improve in comprehension, allow your child to read silently and then discuss the story together.
7. Have frequent drills on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.
8. Share reading with your child.
9. See that your child gets sufficient rest.
10. Let your child know that he/she is worthwhile, is loved, and is special 11. Encourage your child to eat breakfast and pack a "healthy" lunch.
12. Questions: Please call your child's teacher.
Field Trips:
Some field trips will involve all students Grades 1-6. Others may only involve certain grades or only one class; regardless of who attends students will need to have a signed permission form returned to their teacher before they are allowed to travel on the bus or leave school property. No form, student will not leave the school property. NO last minute call to parents for permission. *SIGNED FORM IS REQUIRED.
These activities are after the school day and the coaches/instructors (usually teachers) are volunteering their time to provide these activities for the students. With this is mind, it is important for students to follow the expectations set by the coach/instructor and attend all practices, games, concerts, etc. When a student is selected for an extra curricular event, they must be committed to the entire schedule. Students not in school the day of the event would not participate in that event. Students who place for a Provincial event or Community event must attend or they may not be permitted to participate in other sport/music events for the remainder of the school year. (School t-shirt and music instrument) must be returned in the condition it was received or pay replacement cost). The June report card will not be given to the student until item is returned or replacement cost received.
*Please note: Students who are not on school team(s) are not to stay after school to
watch practice/game. Must have parent in attendance as coach is responsible for team
only.
Locks- All students in Grades 4, 5, 6 should have a combination lock on
their gym locker. These locks will be available from the school.
Guidance:
Many students benefit from the opportunity to discuss matters related to academic work, peer relationships, personal challenges and changes in home environments. While many of the concerns students are dealing with can be managed at the school level through individual, small group or classroom interventions, it may be necessary to work with families in pursuing a referral to other agencies for the supportive services required. As much as possible I strive to keep parents and guardians updated if I continue to work with a student over a period of time. I work closely with school administrators who keep me informed about students whom they, parents, guardians or teachers wish me to see.
I welcome contact from families as I believe that collaboration between home and school is a vital component in promoting children's academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being. If I am not able to communicate with you when you call or drop by, I will respond to any messages as promptly as possible. I feel very privileged to assume the role of counselor and I believe strongly in the importance of respecting the unique qualities and circumstances of each student.

Library:
The library is used by all students and staff and is very important that any book(s) signed out are returned by the due date. Students will be responsible to pay for any book(s) not returned, lost or damaged by them. June Report Card will NOT be given to the student until the text book/school material has been returned or the student pays the replacement cost.
Students will be given text books and other materials to use during the year and they are responsible to return each book/item in the condition they received them in or they must pay to replace them. All these materials are provided through PLMDC (Department of Education in Charlottetown) and no replacement are given until the cost of replacement is received. June report card will NOT be given to the student until the text book/school material has been returned or the student pays the replacement cost.
Reading Recovery is available to grade 1 students who are six years and older. It is a 20 week program designed to help students who have difficulty with the grade 1 curriculum. There are only 4 positions available with one teacher. Each child is taken individually for ½ hour a day to work on both reading and writing (story composition). The intent of the program is early recognition of academic difficulties and early intervention. Parent commitment is critical for success of the grade 1 student.
Fire Drills:
We have five (5) general fire drills each year and teachers do five (5) informal drills each year. This gives students an opportunity for ten (10) fire drill experiences each year. (Our local Fire Department also does an annual visit and participates in at least one of the school fire drills).
*It is important for students to have footwear on at all time.
Lockdowns - For added school safety, the students have been instructed on school lockdown procedures. Students will practice these procedures twice during the year.
Students have lots of room to run and play. Grades 1,2,3, are on the east side of the school with a soccer field, basketball nets, swings, sandbox and playground equipment for recess and noon activities. Students in Grades 4,5,6 have soccer field, ball diamond, basketball court, swings, and organized games for noon.

Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 need t-shirts and shorts to change into for Physical Education class. Students are asked not to take, use or hide t-shirts and shorts that do not belong to them.
After School/Evening Activities:
Students are reminded to be respectful of other student's and teacher's personal belongings and classroom materials. All outside footwear is to be removed at the front doors. You are reminded to go directly to the area for the activity and do not interfere with the custodian's work.
With students having severe allergies, we ask that you do not bring food with nuts/peanut butter to school during school 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or when attending evening activities. This involves student lunches/snacks and treats parents bring to the classroom.
