About Our School
Elm Street School is a dual track school, providing instruction in both English and French Immersion. We have approximately 450 students in Grades 1 to 6, an instructional staff of 27.5 teachers, 6 educational assistants, and 4 non-instructional staff. Because of our French Immersion program, we serve a large geographic area, from Richmond in the west to New London in the east. The school was built in 1960 but we are currently undergoing a major renovation and expansion which will see the addition of several classrooms, a new gymnasium, and updated special education, computer, and library areas. If you have the opportunity to visit our school, we hope that you will find it bright and welcoming. We are fortunate for an urban school to have a very large green space containing play equipment and sports fields for all ages.

**Music** |

"Musical training is more potent than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul." - Plato |
Music classes at Elm Street School are scheduled for a twenty-five minute period every second day. The P.E.I. Elementary Music Curriculum Guide, Grades 1 to 6, by the Prince Edward Island Department of Education is the approved program of study. The goals of the elementary school are:
-to develop competency in problem solving, critical thinking and decision making through experiences with music
- to develop literacy in music including listening, singing and/or playing instruments, reading and writing music
-to develop a positive attitude towards music
-to develop an appreciation of music and the importance of music in our own cultures and others through participation and reflection
-to contribute to the general development of the learner
The music program is divided into four major areas : musical participation, musical awareness and appreciation, musical understanding and musical technology.
The textbooks used are Share The Music. Audio and video recordings, Orff instruments, and numerous games are all used to enhance this program. Christmas Concerts, school carol sings, variety shows, the school musical, and the choirs all offer enrichment to the music program.
We have two choirs and each choir runs from September-December and then again from January -June. The Elm Street Primary Choir is for interested students from grades 1-3. They meet each Tuesday at noon from 12:05-12:35. During the year they perform at the East Prince Family of Schools Christmas Concert, the Elm Street Christmas Concert and the East Prince Music Festival. Their concert dress is black bottoms and white tops.
The Elm Street Elementary Choir is open to interested students from grades4-6 and rehearses on Fridays from 12:05-12:35. During the year they record for the annual Children's Wish Foundation Christmas CD as well as performing at the Elm Street Christmas Concert and the East Prince Music Festival. In order to allow this choir to express their individual personalities, their concert dress is any combination of black and white clothing.
Elm Street School's music teacher, Deborah Voye, would like to receive your comments. |

Students in grades 1-6 at Elm Street School attend Physical classes for 25 minutes every other day. The program is a progressive one which is geared to children's developmental levels. Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; in an alternative environment; i.e.; outdoor orienteering, dance, games, problem solving, gymnastics and individual activities. Co-operative learning and the development of social skills are essential components of the Physical Education program at Elm Street School. The children are taught how to play games and sports for enjoyment in an atmosphere where participation and effort are encouraged and valued. The program aims to develop a knowledge and interest in physical activity as a life long pursuit. The physical education teacher, Kim McNeill, runs extensive Intramural and Leadership programs.
