French Week is an important event in the life of Elm Street School. Held each year in April in conjunction with the provincial "Semaine de la francophonie", French week activities aim to heighten students' awareness and appreciation of French language and culture. Activities are developed by a school-based committee according to a theme chosen for the week. The Department of Education, French Services Division, provides support materials and sponsors cultural events for the week. Patatatout, the French week mascot (an Island potato who likes doing everything in French) is much loved by the children.
The school is decorated for the week in the colours of the Acadian flag. Posters and French signs adorn walls and bulletin boards. There are "expressions of the day" and daily draws for students who make an effort to speak French outside of the classroom. There are contests such as Chasse aux trésors and different kinds of classroom presentations. A series of French multi-media centers are set up which classes may sign up to visit throughout the week. Students and staff come to school dressed in the colours of the Acadian flag on Flag day. An Acadian meal is organized for staff, while students have the opportunity to order croissants.
The week usually winds up with a concert or a sing-song in the gym on Friday afternoon. A good time is had by all during French week as students and staff alike come to appreciate the French language and culture that surrounds us!
