NEWSLETTER

September 9th, 2009

Principal’s Message:

Another summer has come and gone. I hope everyone had a restful holiday. To all Englewood students/families, I extend a warm welcome on behalf of all staff members.

Parents/Guardians play a vital role here at Englewood. It is together that we strive toward a common goal...providing Englewood students with the best educational experience possible.

We have some new staff members:

Cindy Bryenton E.A.
Rosalie Dawson E.A.
Krista Millar-Smith Gr.2
Melissa McKinnon Gr. 3
Also, welcome back to Stephanie Rooney who is returning to the Grade 6 classroom.

Englewood School will continue to be a Peanut and Peanut Products Free School. We do have a grade two student who has a severe allergy to peanuts and peanut products. If you have any questions with regards to this issue, please contact the school.

We wish you all a pleasant and successful 2009-2010 school year.

Randy Reardon, Principal

First Week Information:

The students are taking home a package of important information and forms to be filled out. These forms must be completed in order for your daughter(s)/son(s) to be involved in all areas of daily activity here at Englewood. Parents/Guardians are requested to carefully read through the materials and return signed forms by Friday, September 11th. The package should include:

1) E.S.D. Information - Consent Form - Complete and return to the school - make

sure you include any new address or phone changes and civic numbers

2) Participation, Release and Indemnification for Low Risk Activities - Complete and

return to the school.

3) Internet Use Agreement Form (Gr. 1,4 and 7 and any new students.)

Please discuss the Rules for Students (Schedule "B") carefully with your child, then sign and return the Acceptable Use Agreement (Schedule "C") to your school.

We want your child to learn about computers and use them at school. Access to computer and information technology will give your child new skills, additional learning materials and research opportunities.

While this gives many benefits to your child, there is some unacceptable material on the internet. We have installed software to restrict access to this kind of material, but it could still be possible for students to find it either on purpose or by accident.

We provide all students with an email account. Your child can use this account from ANY computer with internet access. Anyone who receives an email from your child can obtain his or her last name, initials and province from the email address plus any personal information he or she includes in the email. It is extremely important to express to your child/children, the importance of internet safety.

4) Englewood Hankbook: There will be a copy of the 1009-2010 Englewood Handbook sent home to each family sometime this week.

Supply Fees: Just a reminder to students in Grades 1-5 - supply fees of $35 are now due. If your child is in grade 1-5 he/she will have received school supplies that will cover the entire year. These were pre-ordered and payment is due. Please send cash or cheque (made out to Englewood School) to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Student Fees: In order to help defray the costs associated with transportation, school supplies, art materials, intramural equipment, Interscholastic sports referees, recognition awards, etc., the school must collect a Student Fee from students in Grades 6-9. The fee is $16 per student, $26 family rate (2 children), with a maximum of $36 per family (3 or more children), and it is to be paid through the Homeroom teacher during the opening month of school in September. There will no longer be a Band Fee charged to students in the Band Program.

Meet the Teacher Night will be held on Monday, September 14th. Grade 1 parents are asked to meet in the Grade 1 classroom for 6:30 (This will be their only classroom session.) and then proceed to the gymnasium for 7:00 p.m. This year, we ask that the Grade 9 parents meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Grade 9 classroom to discuss their end of school year trip. There will also be the regular classroom session with the teacher after 7:00 p.m. Parents of Grades 2-9 are asked to meet in the gymnasium for 7:00 p.m. and their sessions will follow.

Guidance Services: Our Guidance Counsellor is Ms. Mary Johnston. Ms. Johnston will be available at Englewood on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Dental Clinic: Preventive Dental Program at Englewood School

The Dental Health Team will be starting at Englewood School the week of September 21, 2009 to provide preventive dental services. The objective of this clinic will provide oral health education and preventive dental services to help reduce or prevent dental decay.

In the first couple of days of the clinic, all children will be seen for a two-minute screening to determine their risk of dental decay. If you do not wish your children to have this dental screening, please advise the school secretary or classroom teacher.

Preventive services including oral health education, fluorides, scaling/polishing and sealants will then be provided, according to each child’s individual needs. It will be necessary for you to sign and return a consent form in order to obtain these services. This form will be distributed to the students once the screenings are complete. There is no cost involved with this clinic and parents are encouraged to visit the dental clinic in the school to discuss preventive dental care for their children.

Please note that only preventive services will be provided, and the screening is not a dental examination. It is strongly recommended that parents take their children to a dentist for regular examinations and treatment. In addition to the services provided, the Children’s Dental Care Program covers the cost of basic dental care delivered in private dental offices for children from ages 3-17 (up to 18th birthday).

For further information on our programs and services, please contact the Provincial Dental Health Clinic at 368-4918.

Employment Opportunity!!! Englewood Home and School is looking for someone to prepare hot lunches for Englewood students Mondays and Fridays each week. This is a paid position (monthly) and the person would be required at the school between 10:00 am and 1:00 p.m. (approximately). If interested, please contact Bonnie Ralph 658-2057 or Cindy Darbyson 658-2748. The Home and School would like to start lunches on September 21, 2009.

Lunch Program: On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, students have the option of purchasing a variety of lunch options at school for their noon lunch. Englewood Home & School works with the PEI Healthy Eating Alliance to help introduce and promote healthier alternatives at an affordable price to the children. A healthy lunch promotes better learning abilities and reduces the risk for obesity and other health problems and promotes long term healthy eating patterns for our children. On certain days these purchased lunches may substitute a lunch from home but we encourage good, nutritious food from the home as a means of acquiring a more balanced noon meal.

Noon lunches are eaten during the allotted time in the classrooms and are supervised by home room teachers.

Hot lunches offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some examples of choices are:

macaroni with meat sauce

baked potato with various toppings

nutritious soups/crackers

pizza (ham, beef or chicken toppings)

subs from Captain Sub

grilled chicken burgers/nuggets

hamburgers

pasta dishes

Lunches will be available for $2.00 each (except the subs which average $3.50). Order forms will be sent home with your child at the first of the week for the following week’s meals. Payment for the meals is sent in with the order form and may be in the form of cash or coupons (available for sale by sheets of 20 coupons in the office).

Snack Program

On Tuesdays and Thursdays snack trays will be brought to each classroom during morning recess. On Tuesdays a fruit tray composed of 3 different types of fruit and cheese will be available to all students. On Thursdays 3 different types of veggies with ranch dip and cheese will be provided to each classroom. Also, occasionally there will be whole grain crackers offered alongside the fruit. These trays of fruit, veggies, cheese and crackers are all provided free of charge and are available to all students.

Canteen:

The School Canteen is open to all students during the first part of their lunch break. The canteen offers healthier items to be purchased at reasonable prices. Some examples of items are: fruit cups, puddings, 100% juices, granola bars, cheese & crackers etc. There are also ice cream products (provided by ADL) and subs provided by Jacks Catering.

Our healthy lunch/snack program is second to none for a school of our size and is totally dependant on volunteers. This is a very energetic program which has proven itself with the children being much more open to trying new healthier options in the presence of their peers. Without our volunteers this program would soon disappear. Volunteers are always needed for the Tuesdays and Thursdays to prepare the fruit or vegetable trays so we hope you will respond positively when approached to volunteer or feel free to leave your name and phone number at the school.

Fall Bulbs: Starting on Friday, September 11th, 2009 a Fall Bulb order sheet will be going home with your children. The return date is Monday, September 21, 2009. The Home and School decided to try this fundraiser as the Kindergarten is not doing it this year. We encourage all to sell as much as you can to family, friends, and co-workers. This will be a great boost to the Healthy Eating Program that supplies all of Englewood students with fruit/veggie and cheese trays on Tuesdays and Thursday. Thanks

Milk is provided through the Provincial School Milk Program at the cost of 45 cents for a 250 ml serving of 2% milk. Chocolate milk is also available at the cost of 70 cents.

Juice is also available for $1 through a juice dispenser (across from the canteen) where a variety of flavours are offered.

Microwave ovens are available in every classroom for students who may wish to warm up their lunch. Please refrain from bringing frozen products (such as Michelina’s) that require extended heating time, as it prevents others from accessing the microwave. We also discourage bringing microwave popcorn as it creates a mess on our floors.

No Child Without: Our school is involved in the Canadian MediAlert Foundation’s No Child Without program. Students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 up to their 14th birthday can join MedicAlert through this program at no cost. If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider this program. A child’s MedicAlert identification can alert school staff, friends, coaches and others about your child’s medical condition should an emergency occur.

For further information go to www.nochildwithout.ca. If your child is already part of the No Child Without program and there have been changes to their medical condition, medications or emergency contact information, call MedicAlert at 1-800-668-1507 to update your child’s file.

Walkers/Bikers/Motorized Vehicles: We remind parents that walkers and bikers must fill out a WALK or BIKE form to let us know that your child does have permission to leave the school grounds by other means than the bus. With the school located on the Trans Canada Highway in a high traffic area, we ask students to please wait until the busses are dismissed from the property before heading out on bikes or walking. Motorized vehicles of any kind (dirt bikes, ATV’s, etc.)are not allowed to be taken to school by students.

Students Leaving School Early: We remind you that if your child does not have a not to leave the school property early, a phone call must be made to the school. Please speak to someone in the office area - many parents are directing their messages through their child verbally and by pay phone and we need to speak to a parent. Thank you.

Thank you to Bonnie Ralph and Cindy Darbyson and their families, for coming in last week and working in our front garden. Everything looks wonderful and ready for fall. We appreciate the time you spend beautifying our school property.

S.O.S. Save Our Subscriptions: Just a reminder that September 14th Englewood will be once again running the QSP Readers Digest Magazine Sale. Please renew your Magazine subscriptions at this time or purchase new ones. Gift subscriptions will also be available. Funds raised from this campaign go towards buying items for the school, such as books, sports equipment, etc. Thank you for your continued help and support.
