January News in
Grade One
Welcome back! I hope that
everyone had a well deserved rest over the holidays and enjoyed spending time
with family and friends! The kids were excited to be back today and were
very keen to get right back to work! Here is an outline of what will be
happening in grade one over the next few weeks.
Language Arts:
The students will continue to write on a
daily basis in the classroom. Through journals, response journals, story
writing, etc. the students will be working to improve in the spellings of their
word box words as well as sound/letter relationships when spelling unfamiliar
words. We will also be learning about the author Frank Asch.
The children are encouraged to continue
reading on a nightly basis at home. The books that are sent home are meant
to be at an easier level so that their reading time with you is comfortable and
enjoyable. The children are really coming along well in their reading!
I am so proud of them!
Mathematics:
We will be finishing our unit on
Measurement and then will be starting a unit on addition and subtraction.
This month we will be working with basic doubles (0-3) as well as counting on
with 1 or 2 more. (i.e. 2+1 or 3+2)
Science:
We have finished our unit on Daily and
Seasonal Change and will now begin discussing "The Five Senses".
Health:
We will continue to discuss our different
emotions and feelings. We will also be discussing what characteristics
would make someone a good friend and how we can care for others.
