ENGLEWOOD  SCHOOL

Englewood School Newsletter

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE:   PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS WILL NOT BE THIS WEEK, JANUARY 24 & 25, AS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED IN THE SCHOOL CALENDAR.  THEY WILL BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 21st AND 22nd.

Congratulations to Carl MacDonald on his retirement.  Carl has been a school bus driver for approximately 20 years  with the Bluefield Family of Schools.  Staff and students wish him health and happiness - enjoy those grandchildren!

Welcome: The staff and students of Englewood would like to welcome Ronnie McQuaid who will be driving Bus 37 for remainder of the 2007-2008 school year.

School Activity:

Students in Grades l-3 will be attending a skate at the South Shore Arena on Friday, January l8th from 9:00 - l0:00 a.m.  Parents are encouraged to attend to help with lacing tying skates and are welcome to bring skates along and join in.

Students in grades 4-9 will be having a ski day on Friday, January l8th at the Brookvale Ski Park.

World Vision: We had a wonderful response to our World Vision charity for Christmas.  Money raised through Student Council projects, bake sales and donations from parents and staff totalled $1560.00.  World Vision was extremely pleased when we called to let them know how much we had raised and wanted to pass on their gratitude.  They will also be sending Englewood a plaque to recognize our generous donation.

Tax receipts will be issued to anyone who made a donation of $15 or more.  Because the cheques were received by World Vision in January of 2008,  tax receipts will not be issued until February 2009 to be claimed for the 2008 tax year.   We hope that this does not present a problem to anyone who was expecting a tax receipt.  If we should decide to support this kind of a charity  initiative next year, we will make sure that the cheques are received before the New Year.

Some parents had requested certain items when they sent in their donations and then the grade nine students decided how the remainder of the money would be spent.  Following is a list of how the money was allocated:

Thanks again!

Gr. l Early French Immersion information Meetings: The Early French Immersion Meeting for Westwood Primary will be held on Tuesday, January l5 at 7 p.m. at Westwood Primary School.  The storm date is Thursday, January 24, 2008 (same time and place) and may be subject to change if more than one information meeting is cancelled.

Literacy Bits for Parents:  Introducing a New Book

Taking the time to introduce a new book to your child will pave the way for more success in reading and understanding the book.  This is true for books that your child is reading or books that you are reading to him or her.

Recycling: A reminder to parents that used ink cartridges for printers can be dropped off at Englewood to be used for recycling.  Staples accepts these from us as a school and we have already received funds from them.  Keep up the good work!

Spelling Bee:  Englewood will be holding its 2nd Annual Spelling Bee on January 23rd at l:45 p.m. in the gym.  Parents are welcome to come and watch.  The winner of the school spelling bee will go on to represent Englewood School in the Provincial Bee to be held at UPEI on March l, 2008. More than 60 sixty students participated in the 40 word written spelling bee in order to qualify for the school bee.  Congratulations to the top 27 students who qualified for the school spelling bee:

  NOTICE TO PARENTS

SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS

If all schools are to be canceled, parents will be notified by radio announcements on local stations including   Magic 93, CFCY, OCEAN, K-ROCK, CBC-FM, Cl02, and Bonjour Atlantique that all schools in the Eastern School District are closed.

The first notice will be broadcast by 7:00 a.m.  Sometimes it may only be necessary to close individual or families of schools.  Please refer to the following list of families of schools.

ONE HOUR DELAY

In cases where a decision cannot be made by 7:00 a.m., a one-hour delay will be announced. This means that all schools and buses may operate one hour later than the usual time.

A further announcement regarding delays and/or cancellations will take place by 8:00 a.m.

LATE BUS RUNS

In some instances, even in good weather, buses may be delayed. In these cases, parents will be notified by radio that a bus or buses will be delayed by a specific amount of time.

For example, if a bus is delayed 30 minutes, students can expect to meet the bus 30 minutes later than would normally be the case.

SCHOOL CLOSURE DURING THE DAY

Sometimes, it may be necessary to close individual or families of schools during the day to get children home before weather conditions become too severe.  In such cases, announcements will be made on all radio stations.

PARENTS WHO WILL NOT BE AT HOME WHEN CHILDREN ARRIVE SHOULD MAKE ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN ON SUCH DAYS. PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF THESE CHANGES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS

1. Please listen to the radio between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to determine if schools are operating.

2. Please DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE or the RADIO STATIONS for information, as this overloads the telephone lines that are often in emergency use.

3. Do not drop children off at school unless you are certain that school is operating that day.

4. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN IN CASE OF MIDDAY SCHOOL CLOSURES.

5. IF SCHOOLS ARE OPERATING, THE FINAL DECISION TO ATTEND RESTS WITH YOU THE PARENT.

Together we can work to ensure a safe winter for all our children.
