Literacy Bits for Parents: Learning to Spell

Learning to spell unfolds over time, very much like learning to speak. Successful spellers are developed with lots of meaningful writing experiences.

* Reserve an area of your home for writing activities with all tools within easy access.

* Discuss with your child some ideas or words that he or she may want to use in his or her writing project.

* When your child shares a piece of writing with you, always comment with praise and encouragement to the ideas that he or she is able to express.

* Spelling is often a concern for beginning writers. Focus on the many words that are spelled correctly rather than the few that might be misspelled.

* Praise your child for taking risks with unfamiliar or challenging words.

* Remember that corrections on your child’s piece of writing are usually taken as criticism.

Recycling: A reminder to parents that used ink cartridges for printers can be dropped off at Englewood to be used for recycling. Staples accepts these from us as a school as we have already received funds from them. Thank you for your efforts in this area.

Lightbulbs: Don’t forget lightbulbs are available here at Englewood for 6 bulbs for $10. Just ask at the office.

Dear Parent(s):

It has been the initiative of the Eastern School District to have each school in the district develop a school improvement plan. Over the past few years, we, as a school, have worked hard to improve readings skills and comprehension at every grade level. Therefore, we have decided to focus our efforts on improving students’ writing. Our school district promotes a model for effective writing called the 6 + 1 Traits. This gives teachers a specific overview of the elements of writing and a focused approach to teaching these elements. We have decided to use this model as a method of improving students’ writing at Englewood.

To facilitate student learning, consistent communication among teacher, student and parents is required. It is imperative that parents are aware of the terminology used and are familiar with the methods teachers use to assess writing. To help bridge the gap between school and home, the School Development Committee is hosting an information session on the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing model. This meeting will include an overview of the 6 + 1 Traits, as well as the method of assessment used at each grade level. We will also share valuable tips that you, as parents, can use to support your child’s writing development at home. This meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April l0th at 6:30 p.m., here at the school. It will be in conjunction with the regularly scheduled Home and School meeting.
