Congratulations to our own Hannah MacEwen (Gr. 6) for being selected as one of Canada’s Top 15 and under 15 who are working for positive change to their family, school and communities in order to create a better world.  All 15 young Canadians can be found in the Canadian Family Magazine’s winter issue.  Hannah and her family would like to thank everyone in the community and close friends for all your support towards her in helping the Easter Seals Program and would like to encourage you to keep saving your pennies.  Great work Hannah!!!

Christmas Celebration:  Congratulations to all students and staff who made our 2011 Christmas Celebration a great success!  Thank you to band students, parent volunteers and those who purchased baked items, bottled water and fudge at the Christmas Concert.  There was $5000 raised for our band fund!  Denise Conway was the lucky winner of the $1000 draw – congratulations!

Band Students:  Three Grade 9 band students, Jenna MacFarlane, Eryn MacPhee and Adam MacEachern, have been selected to perform with the PEI Intermediate Honours Band!  They will be rehearsing with 120 advanced band students from across PEI the last weekend in January, with a performance on the main stage of the Confederation Centre of the Arts on Sunday, January 29th.  The concert is open to the public and will also feature a performance by the UPEI Wind Symphony.

Library News:  Englewood has decided to subscribe to World Book Online.  The account offers both a student encyclopedia and a children’s version with easier readability.  This site can be accessed through our school webpage or by going to www.worldbookonline.com.  The username is englewood1 and the password is bulldogs.  Any student with internet access can use this site either at home or at school.

Information on the site is updated regularly, it provides the information needed to reference the page in a works cited page, and external links are updated regularly allowing students to do even more research on a particular topic.  There are even videos for some entries.  All families are encouraged to explore with this subscription.

Scholastic Book Fair:  Englewood will be hosting another book fair this winter.  The fair will run from February 13th to February 17th.  On Monday, February 13th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. we will host our family night.  More information will be sent home as we get closer to the dates.

At our fair in the fall, we had over $2400 in sales which allowed us over $1300 in product from Scholastic.  These fairs allow us to grow our library selections in times of tight budgets.  At this fair, we could earn as much as 70% of our post-tax sales back for the library.  Thank you so much for you ongoing support of our Englewood library.  We look forward to seeing you in February!

Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course:    Englewood is again looking at booking a Babysitting Course in the spring. (some time in April).  The course will be instructed by Atlantic Fitness East – an authorized Provider of Red Cross First Aid, CPR and Babysitting Courses.  This course is designed for youth 11 years and up who want to become a babysitter or may already be one.  The course covers:  responsibilities of a babysitter, safety tips for children of all ages, basic child care skills, and what to do in case of an emergency and basic first aid.  The cost is $30 per student (including Babysitter’s Handbook) or $35 per student including the Babysitter’s Handbook and a personal first aid kit for each participant.

There must be a registration of at least 10 students before a course can be hosted – for this reason – the school asks that if you are interested, please have a parent call the school office and leave your name. Once 10 students are registered, the course dates will be set up in two after-school sessions (probably 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.) There are no monies due until a week before the first class.

Junior High Parents:  A reminder to junior high parents that marks can be viewed online at sas.edu.pe.ca.  All students have their own usernames/passwords.  Also, parents can get their own password if they would like, by contacting Mr. Butler at kabutler@edu.pe.ca.   If parents are having any problems with their account, please contact Mr. Butler.  It has been reported that some parent accounts in the province have had some errors in the new year.

Light Bulbs:  A reminder that light bulbs can be purchase in the office for $10 for a box of six.  The bulbs are Philips 13w=60 w – Energy Saver 60 soft white mini twister bulbs.
