Peanut and Peanut Products Free School:  Englewood School continues to be a Peanut and Peanut Products Free School, as well as a nut free school.  Please be aware of this as you are packing lunches and snacks.  If you have any questions with regards to this issue, please contact the school.

First Week Information:

The students are taking home a package of important information and forms to be filled out.  These forms must be completed in order for your child/children to be involved in all areas of daily activity here at Englewood.  Parents/Guardians are requested to carefully read through the materials and return signed forms by Monday, September 12th.   The package should include:

1)      E.S.D. Information – Consent Form – Complete and return to the school – make sure you include any new address or phone changes and civic changes.

2)      Participation, Release and Indemnification for Low Risk Activities – Complete and return to the school.

3)      Internet Use Agreement Form (Gr. 1, 4 and 7) and any new students.)

Please discuss the Rules for Students (Schedule “B”) carefully with your child, then sign and

Return the Acceptable Use Agreement (Schedule “C”) to your school.

We want your child to learn about computers and use them at school.  Access to computers and information technology will give your child new skills, additional learning materials and research opportunities.

While this gives many benefits to your child, there is some unacceptable material on the internet .  We have installed software to resist access to this kind of material, but it could still be possible for students to find it either on purpose or by accident.

We provide all students with an email account.  Your child can use this account from ANY computer with internet access.  Anyone who receives an email from your child can obtain his or her last name, initials and province from the email address plus any personal information he or she includes in the email.  It is extremely important to express to your child/children, the importance of internet safety.

Supply Fees:  Just a reminder to students in Grades K-5 that supply fees of $35 per student are now due.  If your child is in Grade 1-5 he/she will have received school supplies that will cover the entire school year.  These were pre-ordered and payment is due.  Please send cash or cheque (made out to Englewood School) to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Student Fees:  In order to help defray the costs associated with transportation, school supplies, art materials, intramural equipment, Interscholastic sports referees, recognition awards, etc., the school must collect a Student Fee from students in Grades 6-9.  The fee is $16 per student, $26 family rate(2 children), with a maximum of $36 per family (3 or more children), and it is to be paid through the homeroom teacher during the opening month of school in September.  There will no longer be a Band Fee charged to students in the Band Program.

Meet the Teacher Night will be held on Monday, September 12th.   This year, we ask that the Grade 9 parents meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Grade 9 classroom to discuss their end of school year trip.  Both parents of Kindergarten and Grade One students are asked to meet in their respective classrooms at 6:30 p.m.  There will also be the regular classroom session with the teacher after 7:00 p.m.  Parents of Grades 2-9 are asked to meet in the gymnasium for 7:00 p.m. and their sessions will follow.  Band parents are asked to meet at 7:45 p.m. in the music room to discuss this year’s band program.

Drop-Off:  Students are not to be dropped off to the school before 8:25 a.m. as there is no adult supervision (unless the student(s) are part of the Merry Popins early morning drop off program) -see below.

Merry Pop-Ins Childcare Centre is pleased to now offer their school age programs including before and after school care, March break camp, Christmas break camp, and summer camp from Englewood School.  We are currently accepting registration for all these programs.  Our hours of operation are 7:15 a.m. until school commences in the morning and school dismissal until 5:30 p.m.  For more information or to register, please call Jolene at 658-2560 or email at Jolene@merrypopins.pe.ca.  Visit our website at www.merrypopins.pe.ca!

Guidance Services:  Our Guidance Counsellor is Mr. Mel Bernard until April 2011, when Ms. Auld will return from maternity leave.  Mr. Bernard will be available at Englewood on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Lunch Program:  Englewood Home and School will be sending out the lunch order forms next week and hot lunches will begin on Monday, September 19th.  On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,  students have the option of purchasing a variety of lunch options at school for their noon lunch.  Orders are pre-ordered the week before.

Milk :  Milk tokens are only available in bags of 5.  A bag of 5 white milk tokens will cost $2.25 and a bag of 5 chocolate milk tokens will cost $3.50 (the price has not increased).  We ask that you make an effort to bring exact change.  Bags of milk tokens will be sold in grades 1-4 on Monday mornings and bags of milk tokens will be sold in the office during the week.  There is also a milk vending machine in the lobby where 500ml plastic bottles of white and chocolate are available.  The cost is $1.00 for white and $1.50 for chocolate.  (Only the 250ml white milk is subsidized by the School Milk Program.)

Canteen:  The School Canteen is open to all students during part of their lunch break.  The canteen offers healthier items to be purchased at reasonable prices.  Some examples of items are:  fruit cups, puddings, 100% juices, granola bars, cheese & crackers, etc.  There are also ice cream products (provided by ADL) and subs provided by Jacks Catering.

Microwave ovens are available in every classroom for students who may wish to warm up their lunch.  Please refrain from bringing frozen products (such as Michelina’s) that require extended heating time, as it prevents others from accessing the microwave.  We also discourage microwave popcorn as it creates a mess on our  floors.

RE:  PREVENTIVE DENTAL PROGRAM AT ENGLEWOOD

The Dental Public Health Team will be starting at Englewood School the week of September 8th, 2011 to provide preventive dental services.  The objective of this clinic will provide oral health education and preventive dental services to help reduce or prevent oral disease.

In the first couple of days of the clinic, all children will be seen for a two-minute screening to determine their risk of having oral disease.  If you do not wish your children to have this dental screening, please advise the school secretary or classroom teacher.

Preventive services including oral health education, fluorides, scaling/polishing and sealants will then be provided, according to each child’s individual needs.  It will be necessary for you to sign and return a consent form in order to obtain these services.  This form will be distributed to the students once the screenings are complete.  There is no cost involved with this clinic and parents are encouraged to visit the dental clinic in the school to discuss preventive dental care for their children.

Please note that only preventive services will be provided, and the screening is not a dental examination.  It is strongly recommended that parents take their children to a dentist for regular examinations and treatment.  In addition to the services provided, the Children’s Dental Care Program covers the cost of basic dental care delivered in private dental offices for children from ages 3-17 (up to 18th birthday).

For further information on our programs and services, please contact the Dental Public Health Clinic in Charlottetown at 368-4918 or Summerside at 888-8145.

No Child Without:  Our school is involved in the Canadian MediAlert Foundation’s No Child Without program.  Students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 up to their 14th birthday can join MedicAlert through this program at no cost.  If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider this program.  A child’s MedicAlert identification can alert school staff, friends, coaches and others about your child’s medical condition should an emergency occur.

For further information go to www.nochildwithout.ca.  If your child is already part of the No Child Without program and there have been changes to their medical condition, medications or emergency contact information, call MedicAlert at 1-800-668-1507 to update your child’s file.

Band:    Grade 5 band rehearsals are on Day 2 from 11:40-12:10

Grade 6-9 band rehearsals are every Wednesday from 2:45-4:00 p.m.

Grade 2-6 Choir rehearsals are on Day 4 from 11:40-12:10

After school band rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 14th.  Lunchtime rehearsals begin this week.

Walkers/Bikers/Motorized Vehicles:  We remind parents that walkers and bikers must fill out a WALK or Bike form to let us know that your child does have permission to leave the school grounds by other means than the bus.  With the school located on the Trans Canada Highway in a high traffic area, we ask students to please wait until the busses are dismissed from the property before heading out on bikes or walking.  Motorized vehicles of any kind (dirt bikes, ATV’s, etc.) are not allowed to be taken to school by students.

Students Leaving School Early:  We remind you that if your child does not have a note to leave the school property early, a phone call must be made to the school.  Please speak to someone in the office area – many parents are directing their messages through their child verbally and by pay phone and we need to speak to a parent.  Thank you.

Magazine Campaign:  Just a reminder that September 14th Englewood will be once again running the QSP Readers Digest Magazine Sale.  Please renew your magazine subscriptions at this time or purchase new ones.  Gift subscriptions will also be available.  Funds raised from this campaign go towards buying items for the school, such as books, sports equipment, etc.  Thank you for your continued help and support.

Thank You to North Tryon Women’s Institute who has created a “Legacy Fund”.  Each year a donation will be made to Englewood’s music and library program.  This year the donation was $500.  It is greatly appreciated.
