Notice to Parents: There have been several Englewood students identified as carriers of head lice. We are in the process of checking all of the students at our school - in the meantime - we are asking that parents/guardians please check your child(ren) for live lice or nits (eggs). Nits can be white or grey in colour and adhere to the shaft of an individual hair. Nits can resemble dandruff but dandruff will brush off and nits will not - they need to be removed by sliding them off the strand of hair (we advice using your fingernails) and then crushed. It is important to check your child’s hair on a regular basis.
If you detect any sign of head lice or nits, the hair must be washed with a medicated shampoo that can be purchased at the pharmacy. After the treatment (one treatment) the hair must be checked and nits must be removed by hand. The shampoo should be re-applied 5 to 7 days later. Please see the attachment for further instructions. Please inform the school if your child has lice or nits as we try to be diligent about checking classmates’ hair. After a child has had lice or nits they must be accompanied by an adult to the office to be checked - a child must be free of nits before being permitted back in the classroom.
*** More detailed information and advice is in the Written version***, sent home with children
Parent-Teacher Interviews: Mr. Trainor will not be available on Thursday evening, the 29th for Parent-Teacher conferences. If any parents wish to meet with him, he will be at the school all day Friday the 30th, or they may contact the school to arrange an alternate time/date.
Scholastic Book Fair: The
Scholastic Book Fair will take place this year in the library from 3:30-8:30
p.m. October 29th and from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the 30th.
Previews of the fair will be taking place for homeroom classes on Wednesday, the
28th. Students may purchase books on the preview day, if they
are unable to make it to the fair on Thursday or Friday. Cash, cheques,
and credit cards will be accepted. All profits go directly back to the
school. Thank-you in advance for your support! Mr. Trainor is in need
of a few volunteers to assist with the running of the book fair as he will be in
interviews during the times the Fair will be running. Please contact the
office or reach him via email at jjtrainor@edu.pe.ca
Milk Tokens: Starting Monday, October 26th, milk tokens will only be sold in groups of 5 which will be put into a baggy (we will be recycling the many baggies that pass through the office and Home and School for food orders). The price of milk remains the same at 45 cents for white milk and 70 cents for chocolate milk.
Milk tokens will continue to be sold on
Monday mornings on the lower level. We will also sell bags of milk tokens
in the office mid-week. We will ask that you try to make an effort to
send in the exact change.
Remembrance Day Ceremony: This year the school has chosen to have Red High Heels production come to the school and give a performance of "In Their Own Words". They will take you back through time on an intimate Journey of Remembrance, through a passage way fashioned from war time music and letters written by Canadian Soldiers to their loved ones back home while serving Britain and their own beloved Canada overseas during the Great War.
Student Support Room (SSR): It
is important that parents know about our Student Support Room (SSR). Every
day at lunch recess, Mr. Reardon and/or Ms. Hufnagel make themselves available
in the Student Support Room which is located in the French room on the second
floor. Students who have a detention are asked to come to this room at
lunch time AS WELL AS students who want extra help in any of the academic areas;
whether it be re-teaching concepts, or help in studying for an upcoming test.
*Girl Power*: Your child has been invited to take part in Girl Power, an after school program. Bracken Ferguson is a second year Human Services, Holland College student. Bracken will be offering this program at the school on October 26, 27, 29, November 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th. This program is being offered to girls in grade 5 & 6 only. It will be held after school from 2:50 until 5:30 p.m.
Biathlon PEI: Looking for a new winter sport, why not try Biathlon!
Biathlon is a fun winter sport combining skate skiing and rifle marksmanship. There will be a new
session of Biathlon Bears, the entry-level program for 8-14 year olds beginning the first of December at the Brookvale Nordic Center. The Bears program gives children the opportunity to learn the basic skills in a safe and fun environment. (Air rifles are used for the shooting component). For more information contact Bob Bentley @964-3294 or biathlonpei@gmail.com
NOTICE TO PARENTS
SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS
If all schools are to be
canceled, parents will be notified by radio announcements on local stations
including Magic 93, CFCY, OCEAN, K-ROCK, CBC-FM (CBC
PEI’s Stormwatch), Cl02, and Bonjour Atlantique that all
schools in the Eastern School District are closed.
The first notice will be broadcast by 7:00 a.m. Sometimes it may only be necessary to close individual or families of schools. Please refer to the following list of families of schools.
ONE HOUR DELAY
In cases where a decision
cannot be made by 7:00 a.m., a one-hour delay will be announced. This means that
all schools and buses may operate one hour later than the usual time.
A further announcement regarding delays and/or cancellations will take place by 8:00 a.m.
LATE BUS RUNS
In some instances, even in
good weather, buses may be delayed. In these cases, parents will be notified by
radio that a bus or buses will be delayed by a specific amount of time.
For example, if a bus is
delayed 30 minutes, students can expect to meet the bus 30 minutes later than
would normally be the case.
SCHOOL CLOSURE DURING THE
DAY
Sometimes, it may be necessary
to close individual or families of schools during the day to get children home
before weather conditions become too severe. In such cases, announcements
will be made on all radio stations.
PARENTS WHO WILL NOT BE AT
HOME WHEN CHILDREN ARRIVE SHOULD MAKE ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CARE OF
THEIR CHILDREN ON SUCH DAYS. PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF THESE CHANGES AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE.
SUGGESTIONS
FOR PARENTS
1. Please listen to the
radio between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to determine if schools are operating.
2. Please DO NOT CALL
THE SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE or the RADIO STATIONS for information, as this
overloads the telephone lines that are often in emergency use.
3. Do not drop children
off at school unless you are certain that school is operating that day.
4. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS
FOR YOUR CHILDREN IN CASE OF MIDDAY SCHOOL CLOSURES.
5. IF SCHOOLS ARE
OPERATING, THE FINAL DECISION TO ATTEND RESTS WITH YOU THE PARENT.
Together we can work to ensure
a safe winter for all our children.
