Curriculum Analysis Strategy
The Curriculum Analysis Strategy was developed to examine the relationship between curricular outcomes and teachers’ assessment/evaluation practices and teaching strategies. Through this analysis, the District endeavors to create an environment that broadens and deepens the collaboration among teachers and between schools. The Curriculum Delivery Department plays a key role in the development and implementation of this initiative.  Visit the Curriculum Analysis Strategy website.

District Department Heads
The District assigns teachers to coordinate activities at the district level in a number of areas. The District Department Heads perform these duties in addition to their regular teaching schedule. There are Department Head positions in the following areas:

  Drama Festival
Elementary Music
Secondary Music
Library
Science Fair
Physical Education
Zone 4 Athletics
Zone 3 Athletics

French Immersion

The District provides a variety of French Immersion programs at a number of schools.  All programs at the lower grade levels feed to a single continuing French Immersion program at designated senior high schools.

Information sessions are held in late January or early February. Traditionally, sessions on Early French Immersion are held in Montague and Charlottetown, and a session on Late French Immersion is held in Charlottetown. Dates and times are advertised in local media.

Registration for Early (grade 1) French Immersion is performed at the same time as all grade 1 registrations, usually in early February. Attendance zones are outlined in regulation. Parents of potential French Immersion students, if unsure of the school zone, may contact Transportation Services. The process for Mid (Gulf Shore only - grade 4) and Late French Immersion (grade 7) Registration involves a registration form, and is handled through schools at the grade 6 level.

French Monitor Program
The French Monitor program is an initiative coordinated through the provincial Department of Education. It provides full and part-time assistance to French teachers within schools.

Monitors may be hired from anywhere within Canada. Additional information is available on the CMEC web site.

Summer School
Summer school courses in senior high subjects may be arranged by the provincial Department of Education, in concert with the school board, if needed.  Toward the end of the school year, advertisements are placed in local media to determine interest.  The establishment of courses is determined based on the number of registrations received.

Distribution of Materials/Information to Schools by Outside Agencies
Organizations or agencies outside the provincial education system wishing to distribute materials or information to schools must first receive approval through a request to the Curriculum Delivery Department.

Research Requests from Outside Agencies

Any corporate or research-based interest wishing to contact schools directly must first obtain a letter of approval from the District before proceeding with any such request.  This request for approval should be directed to the Curriculum Delivery Department.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme
The Eastern School District recently established an International Baccalaureate Programme.  For more information, contact Dr. Kevin MacLeod, Curriculum Consultant.

The IB Diploma Programme is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.  Students learn more than a collection of facts. The Diploma Programme prepares students for university and encourages them to: ask challenging questions, learn how to learn, develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture, and develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.  Click here to visit the International Baccalaureate website for information on the diploma programme.

The Diploma Programme is one of three programmes offered by the IB.  (The other two programs are Primary Years and Middle Years.)

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a non-profit educational foundation that focuses on the following:
- The IBO aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
- To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
- These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.  Click here for the International Baccalaureate mission statement.

Charlottetown Rural and Colonel Gray high schools are currently pursuing the four-year application process to become the first IB schools on the Island.  In the future, the IB diploma programme may be implemented in other PEI high schools.
