Glen Stewart Home and School Update for Parents - January 2008
The 2007 Glen Stewart Craft Fair was a great success. We had 86 tables for the first time ever, and expanded our fair to include the violin room, in addition to tables in the gym, the library and the second level. Even though we had a tropical storm on Friday night (coincidentally named Noel), we had close to 1900 people at the door, and we made a profit this year of $10,500, our best year yet!
The Home and School Association wants to first and foremost thank all the students who participated by singing with the choir, playing with the strings, doing the art work for the hallways, walls and the gym, and to the students who volunteered operating the coat check, and donut stand, helping in the concession stand, operating the elevator, and helped with the set up and take down of the tables in the gym. Having the students there added to the fair, our school was a magical winterland, with music and art work that created a wonderful atmosphere. No mean feat two days after Halloween! There were many comments about how great it was to see our students so involved.
We also want to say a big thank you to all our parent volunteers who operated the concession stand, admission and bake tables and the raffle table, served lunch to the vendors, were "runners" to pick up donuts and pizza for concession, set up and took down the tables in the gym, put up posters and banged signs into the ground. We had close to 100 parents who volunteered to help out with the fair this year. Volunteer support is critical to the success of the fair. Thanks as well to all of you who donated bake table items and used books, videos and CDs. The bake table alone had a profit of $1700, so a great big thanks!!
Thanks to our custodial staff, Dave Wilkie and Bill Gallant for their help in setting up the gym and library, taking down the tables, and helping us to resolve every problem that arose - we couldnt have done it without you!! Thanks to Ms. Campbell, Ms. MacLean, the teachers and support staff for all of your support.. As well, special thanks to Ms. Davis and Mrs. Irvine for leading the choir and strings in their performances. The holiday music performed by the students always adds a festive mood to the fair. It was nice to see the Lightbulbs for Literacy and Breakfast for Learning present at the fair, as it helps inform the public about these programs. We also appreciate support from Stonepark Intermediate School for allowing us to use of their tables for the fair. Thanks to the Town of Stratford for delivering and returning the tables to Stonepark.
Advertising was key to our success. We especially want to thank our sponsors, who made the additional promotion of the craft fair possible:
Head of the Class Sponsors: Charlottetown Toyota and Stratford Metro Credit Union
A+ Sponsors: Bill Koughan's Auto Body Ltd, Gaudet's Auto Body Ltd, Lil' Orbits Mini Donuts, Pizza Delight Stratford, and Wendell Taylor's Garage
Friend of Glen Stewart: Kwik Kopy Design and Print Centre
We would like to thank all of those who donated goods and services for the Craft Fair. Special thanks go to the following who donated the items for the raffle: Brad Richards and Mark Derry for the Brad Richards autographed photo, Mark Jenkins for the donation of 5 lbs of lobster, Bernadette Praught of Bernadettes Flowers for a Christmas floral centrepiece, James Aylward of the Confederation Centre for two tickets to PEI Presents, Outer Limit Sports for the Burton hat, the Little Mac Shoppe for selling the iPod at cost, and Lloyd White who made and donated the hockey tree.
Our concession stand was a great success this year. A special thank you to Norman & Kim Day for donating proceeds from Li'l Orbits donuts and candy apples and to the Farmers Market for use of their facilities. Thanks as well to Leigh Jenkins of Pizza Delight in Stratford for donation of pizzas to the concession, Bob MacMillan for donating hot dogs and Robins Donuts in Stratford for their donation of goods. A number of people and businesses were in-kind sponsors to the fair. A special thank you to Bernadette Praught of Bernadettes Flowers, who once again donated her time for a wonderful Christmas Floral Decorating demonstration. Thanks also to Aaron Crane and David Gibler of the Stratford Music Academy for their time providing music on Friday and Saturday to make that Christmas feeling in the foyer. Blair Sweeney created the fabulous posters, handout materials and the newspaper ads, and we extend a big thank UPEI Central Printing for their in-kind donation to the fair.
A number of local businesses were kind enough to let us display notices on their signboards: Town of Stratford , Cooperators Insurance, Wash-A-Way Car Wash, and UR Welcome. Thanks as well to the countless businesses that displayed our posters, and the many parents who distributed the posters. The local media really helped us to advertise the event. Many thanks to the Guardian, The Buzz, and the Journal Pioneer, and to CBC Radio, Magic 93 and Ocean 100 for their support in publicizing our event. A special note of appreciation to Lacey Koughan who lent her voice to this years radio ads - she did a beautiful job!!
Our 2007 Craft Fair was an even greater success
this year, because of the teamwork of students, staff, volunteers
and the community. The funds raised will be used to support the
library, the phys ed program, and other activities within the
school. All of the funds raised by the craft fair are used to
support the school environment for our students.
Happy New Year and best wishes in 2008,
