Green field Home and School Meeting

September 20, 2005

Margie Donovan opened the meeting by welcoming everyone, and having the parents present introduce themselves.

She reviewed the goals and the frequency of meetings. She suggested having meetings in September, November, January and May, with another meeting in March if needed. After some discussion it was decided that meetings would alternate between Tuesday and Thursday nights. Meeting notices are to be put in homework scribblers with students. It was also suggested that the meeting notices be announced on the radio (C102) and put on the Greenfield website ( along with the meeting minutes).

Meeting dates were set for: October 27, January 10 and May 11.

Minutes of the May 5, 2005 meeting were unavailable so Margie reviewed the Agenda.

The fall 2004 school fund-raiser money was to be used to purchase skis, snowshoes and team t-shirts.

The Greenfield Family Dance was a success and raised $410.72.

Cost sharing of field trips to Rainbow valley and Sandspit were approved. Presentation of School lunch program.

Old Business:

Greenfield Family Dance - went well, will discuss in the Spring whether it will be held again.

School Lunch Program- still some interest but no start date set.

New Business:

Hot dog Coordinators are : Lisa Campbell 436-0281

Traci McMillan 432-3912

Dates for Hotdog days are: Sept. 30, Oct.28, Nov.25, Dec.16, Jan. 27, Feb. 24, Mar.31, Apr.28, and May 26.

Many volunteers have signed up to help, any others are asked to call Lisa or Traci. Lisa sent a brief summary of hotdog days and raised the issue of healthier food choices. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that "crispers" or popcorn may be offered as an alternative to chips. Further investigation into healthier choices will continue.

Margie suggested that parents could approach their children’s home room teachers to set up healthy snacks (provided by parents) on a regular basis.

Margie reviewed the Home and School committees and asked for volunteers:

Fall Fund-raiser- Margie Donovan

Looney Tuesday- Angela Carragher

Teacher Appreciation Week- Darlene MacCormack

Fall fund-raiser: Calenders and cards, order forms to go out soon. Orders to be back in by Oct.24 and product will be sent home with parents at Parent Teacher interviews on November 19. There will be an assembly to tie in with Halloween where prizes will be drawn and every child will receive a glow bracelet. Some ideas for the funds raised are: items for the music room, art lessons by Maurice Bernard, Library books and software, a podium ( maybe to be made by students of Holland College or TOSH Carpentry classes), and classroom books.

It was suggested that a book registry could be set up for the next book fair, with each teacher putting up a wish list for their classrooms and parents could purchase and donate the books. Ms. Betts stated she would bring this up at the next staff meeting.

Free book exchange: to be held again in January. A note will go out in the next newsletter to remind parents to set aside books that would be suitable to donate to the book exchange. In January each child will have the opportunity to select a book to keep.

Executive: Margie asked for volunteers, the executive committee members are:

Co-presidents: Margie Donovan

Grade 5&6 playground equipment was discussed. It was suggested maybe we could poll these grades to see what type of activities/ equipment they would like. Angela Carragher volunteered to speak to Mrs. MacKinnon. Another parent stated that there was some new equipment at Tignish Elementary and were to inquire and present at next meeting.

Next Meeting : October 27 at 7pm.

Respectfully submitted,
