Respect Traffic Signs
The lane directly in front of the school is for BUS TRAFFIC ONLY. This is stated on the signs posted and asks that you DO NOT ENTER. Respect these signs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days. Many people drop off or pick up their children before and after school, as well as during the school day. We are very concerned about the safety of ALL the children and you as well. Please be very vigilant when driving in the parking lot. Children may not know your intentions and run in front or behind a moving vehicle.

Attendance
The Western School Board, in accordance with the School Act of P.E.I., requires that students are in regular attendance at school. Regular attendance is important to a student's success. If any student is absent, please call the school or send a note. For the children's safety, we will call the home if we haven't been notified by 9:30 a.m. of an absence. If a child is absent, arrangements can be made to have work sent home by calling the school. When attendance concerns arise and efforts to resolve this issue with the home have not been successful, school administration will notify the School Board and other appropriate support agencies. The school does have the right to deny participation in any or all extra-curricular activities by a student as a result of attendance concerns. A student is considered late if they are not in their classroom by 8:50 a.m.

Emergency Closings
If it is necessary to close the school during the day for any reason, the local radio station will announce this closure. Each family should discuss with their children what they are to do in the event school is closed during the day. This is particularly important with younger children.
We are considered part of the THREE OAKS FAMILY OF SCHOOLS for any cancellation purposes.
If there is a district wide closure, we are part of the WESTERN SCHOOL
BOARD.

Bus Transportation & Conduct
At Greenfield Elementary School we are fortunate to have a group of bus drivers who are very conscientious and professional. Each of them makes every effort to ensure the safety and well being of all students while on the bus. We would like to remind you that students are expected to do as the driver asks, obey the bus safety rules and show respect for other students while on the bus. Students are reminded that the school bus is an extension of the classroom. School rules apply while students are traveling on the bus. Misbehavior by a student while traveling on the bus will be reported to the school principal. Repeated misbehavior may cause a student to lose the privilege of traveling on the bus. If any student is encountering problems while traveling to or from school, please call the bus driver or school principal so these concerns may be looked into before they become serious.

Bus Passes
Students must have written permission from a parent or guardian to receive a bus pass. Bus passes are issued to all students who travel to a destination other than their home. These arrangements may be accommodated depending upon availability of seats on the bus. In emergencies, a parent may call to request a bus pass, but in most circumstances we request that arrangements be made with your child before they leave for school in the morning. Our school is serviced by three telephone lines which are quite busy; therefore students must be granted permission to use the telephone during the day. Permission to use the phone is given for legitimate reasons -- students may not use the phone to make after-school plans.

School Cleanliness
We, as staff and students, work very hard to keep our school clean. We can continue to help daily by keeping outside footwear in the proper area, by placing hand towels in the washroom containers and by making sure that all refuse is placed in the appropriate waste, compost or recycling containers.

Stars of the Cycle
Each six day cycle a student from every class is recognized by their teacher and this is announced over the P.A. system. Each child receives a ribbon to wear for the cycle and this is posted on the "Star" bulletin board, as well as being announced on the PA system.

Birthdays
Each day we will announce the names of those students and staff who are celebrating a birthday on that particular day. Each of these children will receive a birthday ribbon to wear. Also, their names will be on display in our main hallway on our Birthday Board. At the end of each month those who celebrated a birthday will be invited to have birthday cake with the Principal and Vice-Principal.

Home & School Association
Greenfield Elementary has an active Home & School Association which provides several programs of interest to parents each year. We encourage each parent to join and participate in this parent group. In order for the Home & School to run its special events or programs, they need many volunteers (whether you are a member or not). As a school, we need and appreciate the involvement of parents in the operation of our school.
The Executive of the Home & School for 2005-2006 is:
Co-Presidents: To be filled in September
Secretary: To be filled in September
Treasurer: Cheryl Gallant
HotDog Coordinator: Lisa Campbell

Visiting the School
Parents are always welcome at Greenfield Elementary but School Board Policy #17 states you drop into the school office first when you come to the school to pick up or visit your
child. We ask that you respect this policy as we do have students in our school with custodial concerns and security is an issue.

Dress Code
The expectation is that students will come to school appropriately dressed. Clothes will be clean and worn according to the way the apparel was designed. Students wearing clothes that are deemed offensive or inappropriate will be asked to change.
Physical Education students in grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 are required to change into attire which is different from what they wore in school during the day, eg. shorts/sweat pants and T-shirt/sweatshirt (no skorts). Grade 1 & 2 students should wear loose fitting clothing suitable for play. All students should have proper fitting sneakers that fasten securely. From December to early March when the gymnastic part of the curriculum is taught, students are required to wear gymnastic slippers or to be bare feet for safety reasons and equipment preservation.

Student Insurance
At the beginning of each school year, parents are able to buy accident insurance for their children. This is not compulsory but we strongly encourage parents to purchase this insurance policy.

Greenfield Code of Behaviour
We have at Greenfield Elementary School a Code of Behaviour that requires that students realize that aggressive behaviour can lead to violent outbursts that may lead to children being hurt. We are asking that all students and staff respect the integrity of the individual, the rights of persons in the school, and the responsibilities of such persons in the school community.
Life and rules are best kept simple for children. Therefore, our code stresses the physical and emotional well being of all students.
Our basic rule is: "hands and feet to yourself". Then use the 5 C's: Common Sense; Courtesy; Co-operation; Communication; Conflict Resolution.

Code of Behaviour ~ Consequences
It is important for students to recognize that misbehaviour will not be tolerated in the school and quick, fair and appropriate discipline will be handed out when necessary. In developing possible courses of action for unacceptable behaviour, emphasis is placed on providing fair and logical consequences which are appropriate to the nature of the unacceptable behaviour. These consequences will be flexible enough to accommodate varying levels of student maturity, and progressive enough to allow recurring or more serious offences to be dealt with more firmly over time. Students will be encouraged to use the conflict resolution steps and anger management when they are in conflict with another student. These are reviewed with the students at the beginning of each year. We know there are times when we may want to make excuses for our children's behaviour or to try to place the blame somewhere else, but please remember that by teaching our children to accept responsibility for their actions, we are preparing them to be good citizens for the future.
Please note that when the administration is dealing with an issue, we listen to all involved. It is not our policy to discuss the consequences of other students. Please remember that there are many factors that are considered. What may be a consequence for one student, may not be an appropriate consequence for another.
Conflict Resolution Steps
State what you want
Say how you are feeling
State why you want what you want
Paraphrase what the other person has said
Together come up with three win/win solutions

Student Activities
Sports - Pupils may participate in Cross Country Running, Soccer, Badminton, Gymnastics, Wrestling, Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field. These activities are offered as an opportunity for children to maintain a healthy life style and develop lifelong fitness. Intramurals are also offered to the students during most lunch breaks. Participation will be available to those who attend regularly, follow game rules and show respect for others.
Choir and other Musical Activities - Choir and/or recorder are offered as extra-curricular activities to Grade 1 to 6 students. Again, these activities are offered to children who attend regularly, meet the expectations set out and show respect for all.

Assemblies
The practice of conducting a number of assemblies will continue. During these gatherings, the Peace candle will be lit and students will be recognized for a variety of academic, athletic and artistic achievements. As well, each grade level will have the opportunity to entertain the school during these assemblies. We will continue to work on positive esteem themes as well as maintaining the theme of our Peaceable School.
