The New Brunswick delegates as well as Lt.Governor Gordon arrives on a boat called the Princess of Wales. Four other delegates of
Nova Scotia come on a steamer called Heather Belle.
September 1st
Canadian steam ship Queen Victoria arrives. Conference Officially starts. All the delegates are there except John A. Macdonald because
of a family illness. Canadian delegates look for a place to stay. George stayed at the provincial secretary's house. Most
delegates stayed on the Queen Victoria. There is a party for the delegates.
September 2nd
Canadians detail plans for union of British North America. W.H. Pope hosts dinner.
September 3rd
Canadians go into detail about proposed union.Canadian delegates invite others aboard Queen Victoria.Col.Gray hosta a party at his
home.
September 4th
The delegates go to church then they spent the day relaxing.
September 5th
The Canadians continue where they left off explaining the new balance of power.
September 6th
The day is spent by Maritimes asking questions about parts that the Canadians propose. The Maritimers of the island had a hard time
understanding.
September 7th
On Wednesday sept. 7th the Maritimers spent the day in meetings discussing the joining of the provinces. The Canadian invited their
wives of the Island and the delegates aboard the Queen Victoria boat for lunch.
September 8th
On Thursday Sept.8 in the morning some delegates go on tour of the north shore. While others prepared to leave and say goodbye.
That night from 9am to 4pm there was a big ball.
September 9th
The Queen Victoria boat left. The boat had to leave 4 hours later because of heavy fog.
George Brown
George Brown was born on November 29, 1818 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He died on May 8, 1880 in Toronto, George Brown was a
Journalist, he was a also a politician. He had alot of power in Canada west. He also owned a newspaper called "The Globe
Journal". He moved to Toronto newspaper in 1843, in 1857 he entered the Canadian parliament (liberal). He attacked the Roman
Catholic Church, he also wanted to separate church and state. In t\1858 he was prime minister for a short time. He we was
one of the first supporters of confederation of BNA. He was resigned from the government.
John A. Macdonald
John A. Macdonald first arrived in Canada when he was five years old.His family was very poor but they were able to save enough
money to send Johnny to boarding school. But his family did not have enough money to send him to university, so he worked in a
lawyers office by day and studied law by night. When he reached the age of twenty-one he opened his own law office.
He was admired for his friendly manners and his sense of humour but he did not have much of a personal life, he had two boys but one
dies a very young age of 1 year old. He had a wife that was constantly sick and she dies in 11857. Later on John a. Macdonald
became the first prime minister of Canada, he was a great man.
William McDougall
William McDougall was born in Toronto of Upper Canada, on January 25, 1822.He dies in Ottawa of Canada West on May 29,
1925.William McDougall was a representative of the province of Canada, his position was pro-confederation.
William MacDougall received his education.
William McDougall received his education in his hometown of Toronto, and then Cobourg. When he was fifteen he witnessed a reform
as a bystander at the burning of Montgomery's Tavern, in the rebellion of 1837.
Later in his life, he began a career in law, but then moved to publishing for a newspaper. McDougall began politics with his work in
forming the upper Canadian reform movement. He sat in the assembly of the province of Canada from 1858 to 1867. He was the
commissioner of crowns land in 1862 to 1864.
McDougall was on the conservative party in 1867. His nickname was Wondering Willy, which would stick with him for the rest of his
political career. He was a supporter of the British North American Colonies joining to make confederation.
He was appointed lieutenant governor of Rupert's Land in 1869, but came into contact with Louis Riel and his rebels in the Red River
rebellion, and had to return in disgrace to Ottawa.
