CHARLOTTETOWN CONFERENCE 1864

Thursday September 1st The meeting officially starts.
Friday, September 2nd
John A. Macdonald and George E. Cartier tried to convince the Maritimers to join confederation, and they did a good job in convincing some of them.
Saturday September 3rd
The delegates decided to take a break from the meetings and relax that day.
Sunday September 4th
This day was spent by the Maritimers asking questions about parts of the Canadian Document, they didn't understand what it was.
Monday September 5th
George Brown explained the problem between the federal and provincial government. Then he explained how the power would be divided up.
Canadians watched what was happening around the South of the border such as the civil war. They decided that it ws a problem in their constitution.
In the State anything that was given to do under the federal government the area ws up to the one state to decide. Canadians thought that this is what caused the southern state to get what they wanted. AlsoGeorge Brown spent the afternoon going over examples of how this would work in certain situations. The plan explained that day was pretty much what really happened.
Tuesday September 6th
It was the last day to ask questions about the plan, it was their chance to speak up on their thoughts and suggestions.
Wednesday September 7th
it was the last day of meetings and then they would go abord the ‘Queen Victoria' with their wives. (This showed how good the Canadians were as people.)
Thursday September 8th
This is the last day that the delegates would be in Charlottetown, so they threw a grand ball.
That was the Eight days of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864.

Andrew A. MacDonald


Andrew A. MacDonald was born in Three Rivers, PEI. In 1829. And died in Ottawa, Ontariio, March 21 1912. He was representing PEI and was Pro confederation.

After getting a local education, he went to be a murchant and owned his own ship.

In the year 1854, he was elected into the PEI assembly until 1858. In the year 1863, he was sent to the newly created Canadian Legislative council. But he could not make it to the Charlottetown conference because of a family illness.George Coles

In 1842, George Coles entered politics on PEI from being elected into the house of assembly. By 1847, he went from a conservative to a Reform Party. His position with performers had started to lead into Responsible Gout in PEI.

When he reached his goal in 1849, he finallly became the first premier of PEI under the Responsible Gout. With that, he would be elected the position of premier three times between the years of 1851-1868.

At the conference, Coles wasn't too enthused about the idea of uniteing the BNA colonies. His position in the Island Gout, kept the orvince from joing the initial union. Finally in 1868, Coles gave up the position of premeir cause he couldn't stanmd it. John Hamilton gray was born in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island , in the year 1811, on June 14th. He represented P.E.I and was a conservative. He was one of the five Fathers of Confederation, for P.E.I. In 1858, Hamilton entered Politics and was elected into the Legislative Assembly of P.E.I. Jonh Hamilton Gray was a great host for the Charlottetown Conference. he was so good at it that he was elected as chairman, of the Maritime Delegates. When John hamilton gray was at the young age of 66, he died. the year was 1887, August 13th. He died in Charlottetoen, P.E.I. John hamilton Gray was a Lawyer. John Hamilton Gray also had a ferry named after him.

Thursday September 1st 1864 The Maritime delegates, despite being ready to begin had waited for their Canadian Counterparts to get there before they started the conference on the proposed Maritime Union. Friday Sept 2nd 1864 Jonh A. Macdonald and George Étienne Cartier started off the Canadian case for a union of British North America. Saturday Sept 3rd 1864 After spending a day explaining why the Confederation was a good and possible idea and that is needed as a fast action the Canadians went to the specifics Alexander Galt, the minister of finance for the province of Canada was in charge of explaining the money arangements that would be necessary for the new nation, one of the touchiest subjects of the whole Confederation. Sunday September 4th 1864 The people of Condfederation sat around and relaxed. Monday Sept 5th 1964 Day number three of the Canadians revealing their plans was george brown's job. he had to explain both the constitution of the federal legislature as well as the division of jurisdurictions of power between the feederal and provincial government. Tuesday Sept 6th 1864 This is the last day of meetings for the Canadian Delegates and it became a question period for the Maritime Delegates who wanted to go over obscure points and things they were unsure about. Wednesday Sept 7th 1864 On this day the Delegates assembled alone to discuss the original reason for the Conference in Charlottetown, a Maritime Union. The idea was not very popular and it was really only the Delegates that wanted it.. Ambrose Shea Ambrose Shea was born in Newfoundland on September 17th, 1815. He died July 30th, 1905 in London. When he was 22 years old he left succesfully with journalism, and he was also a merchant. In 1848 he was elected to the house of Assembly in Newfoundland. He was elected back and fourth in and out of the assembly. Later in life he went to London and became one of the head guys in the Government. When he retired he lived the last few years of his successful career and life in London. (Ambrose Shea died at the age of 90 years old.) By Ashley Gallant
