Most city-states trained young men in the art of warfare and required all able-bodied male citizens to take up arms in time of war. During their youth, boys were trained at school how to handle weapons. They were also tested on endurance and physical stamina. War is one of the main reasons why men were valued more then women, as they were needed and expected to fight at all times, whereas women were expected to stay at home. Killing was also valued by the Ancient Greeks as they felt they were more powerful with all the deaths they had caused.
