Directions for Preparing Formal Papers at Hernewood
PAPER
:Paper must be white, 81/2" by 11", and bound by a staple in the upper left hand corner.
FONT & SIZE:
When typing a report, use a regular font such as Times New Roman or Arial. Also, make sure to use a 12pt font.
FORMAT:
Spacing
All papers are to be double-spaced, typed (if possible) or handwritten in blue or black ink. Do not force the double spacing by pressing enter at the end of the line. Instead, let your work processing program adjust the line spacing. This can be done as one step at the beginning of the document. Path Structure: Format Line Spacing
Quotations
Short Quotations (three lines or less, expect for poetry) are run in with the text using quotation marks.
An Example: Black Beauty was described as a beautiful horse. "I was a handsome colt, and because of my dark coloring, my master, Farmer Grey, called me Darkie" (Sewell, 7).
Long Quotations
When you quote more than four typed lines for prose, or more that three lines of poetry, you must single space and change the margins. Long quotations should be introduced by an informative sentence usually followed by a colon. Quotation marks are not necessary because the indented form tells readers that the words are taken directly from the source.
An Example: Black Beautie’s mother was explaining why he was unusual and different from the other horses:
The other colts here are good colts, but they’re fit only to have carts. You are Different; you're well bred and come from a fine line of horses. Your grandfather won many races you know, and he’d hate to see you behaving like these other colts. For your own sake, I hope you grow up gentle and good-tempered, and always do your best, no matter what (Sewell, 7).
Indirect Quotations
According to Sewell, from a young age, Black Beauty was taught that he was different from the other colts. This affected his behavior in later years (7).
MARGINS:
Document should have one inch margins.
The top margin on the first page starts one-third of the way down the page. (For an approximate starting point press the Enter key ten times.)
For other pages, the page number is typed/written in the upper right hand corner of the paper. Path Structure: Format Page Numbering
TITLE PAGE:
Start title about one third of the way down the page, center the title.
Capitalize the appropriate first letters, but do not underline, italize, or use bold or oversize the type. If it occupies more than one line, single space it.
Near the bottom of the page, center your name, the name and number of your course, your teacher’s name, and the due date of the paper.
The final line should be approximately one inch from the bottom of the page.
Remember: When using the title of a major piece of writing on your title page you must underline the title of the work. When using the title of a minor piece of writing on your title page, you must put the title of the work in quotation marks (unless the work is found in an anthology.) *** See example.
