Closures

NOTICE TO PARENTS

The Western School Board transports approximately 7000 students to and from school each day. In making decisions about the closure of schools, safety is it’s prime concern. The board works with the Department of Transportation and Public Works, local snow removal contractors, the Department of Environment, local radio stations and the RCMP in attempting to make appropriate decisions about school closure. Decisions must be made very early in the morning if buses are to be stopped and parents notified. ****Due to the geographic extent of the Western School Board it may be necessary to delay or close all schools or some of the schools. When a partial delay or closure is called it will be done on the basis of Family of Schools. (Hernewood Intermediate is in the Westisle Family of School).

School Cancellation

If schools are to be cancelled, parents will be notified by radio announcements on most local stations. The first notice will be broadcasted by 7:00 a.m.. In some instances it may only by necessary to close individual schools.

One Hour Delay

In cases where a decision cannot be made by 7:00 a.m. an one hour delay will be announced. This means that all schools and buses may operate one our later than the usual time. A further announcement indicating the starting time or cancellation will take place by 8:00 a.m.

Buses Running Late

In some instances, even in good weather, buses may be delayed. In these cases, parents will be notified by radio that a bus or buses will be delayed by a specific amount of time. For example, if a bus is delayed 30 minutes, students can expect to meet the bus or arrive home 30 minutes later than what would normally be the case.

School Closure During The Day

At times it may be necessary to close individual or Families of Schools during the day in order to get children home before weather conditions become too severe. Announcements will be made on local radio stations. Parents who will not be in the home when children arrive should make alternate arrangements for the care of their children on such days.

In Extreme Weather Conditions

When advised by the Department of Transportation and Public Works that conditions are hazardous, students may be required to remain at school beyond their normal dismissal time unless picked up by parent or designate. Announcements will be made on all radio stations if this occurs.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS

Please listen to the radio between 6:45 and 8:00 in the morning to determine if schools are operating. Every effort will be made to make the call by 7:00 a.m. but parents are encouraged to be attentive

Please do not call the School Office or the radio stations for information as this jams the telephone lines which are often in emergency use. Please call the school only if it is an emergency.

Do not drop children off at school unless you are certain that school is operating that day.

Make arrangements for your children in case of mid-day school closures.

If schools are operating, the final decision to attend rests with you the parent. Hopefully, we can work together to ensure a safe winter for all of our children.

Hopefully, we can work together to ensure a safe winter for all of our children.

Note: The driver is not responsible to ensure someone is at home when dropping off students at the designated drop-off location (either on a regular school day or during inclement weather). This is a parental responsibility. Thank you for your co-operation.
