DRAMA

Due to the many storm days, not to mention the numerous cancelations of after-school activities due to poor weather we’ve had here at Hernewood this winter, we’ve had to cancel this year’s production of "Beauty and the Beast." As well, the rehearsal schedule of such a large-scale production is very demanding and many students were finding it difficult to commit to the after-school rehearsals on Mondays & Thursdays. However, I would like to continue to offer the drama program to students on Mondays after school until 4pm so that we can continue building on the skills we’ve developed so far this year. If you have any questions or comments,

Please contact Mr. Sparks by calling the school.

GRADE 9 NEWS

Ms. Thomson’s, Ms. Dyment’s and Ms. McGuire’s grade 9 Social Studies classes participating in Student Vote.

All grade 9 students at Hernewood will be participating in the upcoming federal election through their registration with StudenVote.ca.

On May 2nd, all grade 9 students will have the opportunity to go to the polls and cast ballots on the official candidates running in the federal riding of Egmont.

Student Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that aims to build the capacity and commitment of young Canadians to participate in their democracy. Student Vote’s flagship program is a parallel election for students under the voting age, coinciding with official election periods. The program combines in-class learning, family dialogue, media consumption and an authentic voting experience. To date, Student Vote has successfully designed and coordinated ten parallel elections. In the 2008 federal election, 4,300 school registered to participate and 500,000 students cast a ballot.

Hernewood will receive a FREE election simulation package with curriculum resources, posters, and electoral supplies including ballot boxes, voting screens and ballots. Using the materials provided, students learn about the democratic process and the role of government, and investigate the party platforms and local candidates.

On Student Vote Day, students take on the roles of election officials and conduct a vote on the official local candidates. The results are collected from schools and shared with media for broadcast and publication after the polls close on Election night.

The rationale of Student Vote is that practice makes perfect. To become active and engaged citizens in the future, students must rehearse the rights and responsibilities of their citizenship now.
