Activity

1. Have students read a variety of articles/stories about space exploration. (You may wish to have each student read something different).
2. As a class, brainstorm what you know about space exploration. Now brainstorm what you know about the contributions of Canadians to space exploration. Discuss how uneven distribution of power and wealth has impacted space exploration.
3. In groups, choose a Canadian astronaut to research in more depth. Have these "Expert groups" follow the guidelines found in Journey On: Mission to Mars.
4. Each Expert Group is to create a slideshow using AppleWorks to share with their peers about their Canadian astronaut. Possible categories to include are their qualifications, interests, space job and quote.
5. Students in each group are to add graphics to their slideshows from several different sources.
- To use a graphic or clipart from the Internet, right click on the graphic and save to your file.
- To use a graphic from UWCC or Inspiration, use PaintShop Pro capture tool (default is hotkey F11) to click, hold and drag a box around your image. Then in PaintShop Pro, save the graphic as a jpeg file.
- Students may also want to scan an illustration they have completed on paper or use a digital photo of a presentation or object.
- In AppleWorks, you can also use the library as a source of images.

Assessment

1. Brainstorm criteria for effective slideshows. Create a mutually agreed upon checklist. Have students use this checklist to evaluate each others’ slideshows. (You may wish to experiment with doing this before they do their slideshow and after they complete their slideshows, but before they share them to see if there is a change in recommended criteria).
2. Have each group complete a group evaluation rubric, including a scale of 1-5 for their group’s success in cooperating, staying on task, sharing the load, effective use of language, etc.
