Students will:
STO C7 perform effective Internet/Database searches.

STO C7.1 perform simple searches (single keywords and phrases).

STO C7.2 understand and use various search engines.

STO C7.3 understand that different search engines give different results for the same research.

STO C7.4 perform Boolean and complex searches.

STO C7.5 perform and effective search using a CD-ROM encyclopedia or similar source of information.

STO C8 use proper criteria to evaluate usefulness of websites.

STO C9 use and organize bookmarks.

STO C12 properly cite Internet sources.

STO D1 understand the components of proper database construction.

STO D1.1 create an original database to help organise information.

STO D1.2 create a database with variable field types and field widths.

STO D1.3 restructure database (add /delete fields, change field width).

STO D1.4 design an input screen using graphics tools.

STO D1.5 sort records alphabetically or numerically by multiple fields.

STO D1.6 understand logic, date and summary field types.

STO D2 carry out effective searches and queries to isolate needed information.

STO D2.1 use appropriate scope and filters.

STO D2.2 use logical operators and boolean operators in queries.

STO D2.3 create a database report.

Activity

Students will research various animals to do a comparative study related to sexual reproduction in representative organisms. They could investigate such things as age of sexual maturity, gestation period, birth weight, birth numbers, and other topics which interest the students or teacher. Students should gather information for ten to fifteen animals. The information will be stored in a database so as to facilitate organization, sorting and comparison.

Resources

Access to various research resources including electronic and print materials and Internet.

Hint: A search term which can lead to some success in the search engines is “animal information”. Be sure to include the quotes. www.AltaVista.com and www.Google.com are good places to start.

Necessary Files

Use file called animrepve5.cwk This file is intended for use by the teacher only, simply to give an example of what the database could look like.
