F1 use e-mail as a means of
communication
F1.1 send and receive e-mail as an
individual or as a class
Telecommunication makes use of phone lines, high-bandwidth ca-
ble, and satellites as a means of communicating electronically. A variety of
devices utilized for telecommunication include telephones, FAXs, comput-
ers and their peripheral plug-ins, scanners, digital cameras and equipment
used in video-conferencing. Telecommunication has become a household
word with the introduction of the Internet and its resources (such as e-mail,
listservs, newsgroups and Telnet) into our everyday lives. The Internet has
been responsible for the disappearance of traditional political, economic and
social boundaries and the development of a new concept, the global vil-
lage. Students should be reminded that the telecommunication global vil-
lage does not include most of the developing world. Internet access is
largely limited to developed countries.
The most frequently used resource of the Internet is electronic mail or
e-mail. E-mail is software that enables you to send and receive messages via
the Internet to any other computer connected to the Internet. The main
advantage of e-mail is that it allows almost instant communication with an-
other individual. Through e-mail you can send written notes, electronic
greeting cards, documents, graphics, and programs.
Addresses
As with regular mail, e-mail requires an address. With e-mail, the
address begins with a username that is followed by an @ symbol and the
location of the computer that uses the e-mail account. It is important to write
the full e-mail address without any spaces between any of the components.
A typical address would be:
kmcdonal@gov.pe.ca
The first two or three letters after the @ symbol identify the type of institu-
tion.
.edu
education
.com
commercial
.gov
government
.org
non-commercial
organization
The last two letters refer to the country. In our example, ca. would refer to
Canada.
