Guidelines for School Web Pages
PEI
Department of Education
Rationale:
School
web pages are public documents allowing communication within
the school community and with the public worldwide. Guidelines
are required in the construction of school web pages in order
to protect the students and their work, and to ensure that information
displayed is appropriate for any Internet user, and to comply
with the provincial Freedom of Information and Protection of
Privacy Act.
The following content guidelines have been developed to help
promote and enhance learning opportunities for students, and
to maintain an appropriate web environment.
Guidelines
Responsibility/Protocol
Each
school is responsible for developing and updating their pages.
The principal is ultimately responsible for the content of the
site. However, it is strongly encouraged that the principal
designate one or more webmaster(s) who would be responsible
for managing and maintaining the site. The webmaster(s) would
have ftp access to upload pages and images to the school web
site and would help the principal adhere to the guidelines set
out in this document.
Requirements
1.
Communication with respect to the content of any page should
be directed to the appropriate staff member or to the school
webmaster. Nothing on the school's web page shall make
it possible for students to be contacted.
2. School web sites are for educational use only. Content of
the site should give information about the school and promote
such school activities such as:
- School
location
- School
history
- School
profile
- School
mission statement
- School
logo, dress code
- School
calendar and holidays
- School
newsletter
- School
staff
- School
community partnerships
- Homework
assignments and deadlines
- School
and board policies
- Course
descriptions
3.
Content of school web sites must be in line with the educational
goals set by the school or board. Files not directly related
to the web site may not be uploaded to the server.
4. School web pages shall follow board policy concerning commercial
advertising.
5. When using pictures or names of persons on the school web
site, written permission shall be obtained from that person
and from the parent or guardian.
6. Pictures of students included on school web pages must not
include the student's last name.
7. Schools should not use filenames for pages or images which
include the student's name.
8. Home pages for personal use are not permitted. Students
may create content pages under their instructor's supervision,
but not pages containing personal information or links to personal
sites.
9. Staff may create educational sites containing homework, resources,
or lessons.
10. The date of the last update should be visible on every page
and the main page should be updated on a monthly basis.
11.
Contact information for the school (e-mail, address, phone,
fax, principal’s name) should be clearly displayed on
the site. Principals may wish to include their email addresses
for further contact.
12.
All external links must be in support of education and relevant
to the topics presented on the page.
Web
Design Tips
1. Use consistent navigation throughout your site. (student/grade/special
program pages may vary, but administration pages should maintain
a consistent look and navigation).
2. Avoid colour schemes or backgrounds that make text hard to
read.
3. Use graphics/animations sparingly, keeping in mind that the
more images you have, the longer it will take for your page
to load.
4. Avoid overcrowding your page.
5. Choose common fonts such as Times New Roman or Arial. Keep
in mind that text in special fonts must be saved as a graphic
within a program such as Paint Shop Pro in order to be displayed
properly on all computers.
6. Avoid white text, which is difficult to print.
7. To help organize your site, create separate folders for each
main area within the school site (e.g. sports, class pages,
newsletters, etc.).
8. Name your files using clearly identifiable words.
9. The school’s main homepage should have the file name
index.htm
10. Check to make sure each link works after posting the site.
11. Navigational links should be available on every page.
12. Include a title on each page (the title appears on the Web
browser’s title bar)
13.
Email regarding the web site shoudl be monitored and responded
to in an appropriate manner.
Copyright
Copyright
must be respected. The author of a web page must not use copyrighted
material without permission. For more information, see the school
principal for the latest copy of the CANCOPY agreement.
