Materials needed for Sewing Unit : Tote Bag Project

1. Fabric:  1 meter of a woven fabric (115 cm in width)

Printed cottons or cotton/polyester blends are the easiest to work with for beginners.
Do not choose: denim or heavy fabrics; knit fabrics of any type; shiny, satiny fabrics.  (These are too difficult to cut and sew.)

               2. Thread:  1 large spool of matching all purpose thread.  (Not quilting             thread!)

Note:  A drawstring cord of 1.5 meters is needed, also.  I provide the proper type for $1.00 per piece.  (Choose cord that is not drapery cord, which is shiny and twisted, and cannot be sewn over.)

Fabric and thread is needed by the third week of the sewing unit.  Please contact me via e-mail if there is a question or a problem getting fabric.  Recycled fabric or fabric you have already may be used.

Grade 9 Sewing Project: Pants or Shorts

Grade 9 students can choose to make a pair of shorts or pyjama pants.  The materials will be needed by the third week of the sewing unit.  If you have a problem getting the materials or have a question, please contact me by phoning the school and leaving a message, or by e-mail.                                                         bjyoung@edu.pe.ca

1.  Fabric: Choose a woven fabric.  A printed cotton or cotton blend is the easiest to work with.  Do not choose fleece or other knits, or denim, as they as hard to cut and sew.  How much depends on your size.  Most pants take 2.0 to 2.5 meters, and shorts take 1.2 to 1.5 meters, depending on the length you want.  Measurements are done in class, and students take home a sheet which tells them how much to buy.

2. Thread: 1 large spool of all purpose thread.  Do not buy quilter’s thread!

Elastic or drawstring cord:  Elastic: 1 meter

Cord: 1.5 meters

I provide these for approximately $1.00 per piece.  If you use elastic, choose the non-roll type which costs more.
