The Production Of Power From The Wind | |
| §tep One: Wind mills are mounted on a tower, so they reach higher into the air, enabling them to be able to catch more energy from the wind. The mills catch the wind with their propeller like blades. |

| §tep Two: Parts Of A Wind Turbine
nacelle-- Contains all of the important parts of the wind mill rotor blades -- The rotor blades capture the wind and transfer its power to the rotor hub. The blades are designed much like a wing of an airplane hub-- is connected to the low speed shaft of the wind turbine. low speed shaft-- connects the rotor hub to the gearbox. The shaft consists of the pipes for the hydraulics system to enable the aerodynamic brakes to function. gearbox--makes the high speed shaft to the right, turn about 50 times faster than the low speed shaft. high speed shaft with its mechanical brake--drives the electrical generator, has a back up brake electrical generator--converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. yaw mechanism--uses motors to turn the nacelle against the wind, operated by the electronic controller electronic controller-- has small computers that monitor the wind turbine, if any thing goes wrong it shuts the machine down, sends a message to the commanding computer's telephone modem link. hydraulics system-- Used to reset the brakes cooling unit-- contains an electric fan which is used to cool down the generators tower -- Hold the nacelle and rotor, the higher in the air this is placed the greater wind speeds it will receive anemometer and wind vane--used to measure the speed and the direction of the wind. wind vane. | ![]() |
