Welcome to Mrs. Spence's Grade 11 Chemistry Class Webpage!

This site was created by grade 11 chemistry students during the 2002-2003 school year. Since most of the students had access to the internet at home, they felt that it would be very beneficial to have homework, assignments, answer keys and additional resources online. That way, those students who were absent could get caught up easily and those who missed going over tests or assignments could review the answer keys before exams.

Unfortunately, the idea of having a webpage came late in the semester, so the content is limited to the latter part of the second term. Two students designed the site as an alternative to doing an assignment they missed. They found graphics to use on the internet, and they included a slideshow and review activities for one of the most important concepts we covered - identifying and naming compounds. As an assignment, students were asked to find and describe two good websites for studying chemistry. These have been included on the Links page.

Probably the most common question students ask in any class is "when will we ever use this?" To answer this with regards to chemistry, students had to choose a career and do some research on it using the internet and other resources. At minimum, they had to find out a) the specific duties for that occupation, b) the degree to which a knowledge of chemistry is needed for the career, and c) examples of how chemistry would be applied in that career. The information they collected had to be summarized on a poster and presented in front of the class. Several of the posters have been showcased on this site. We hope you enjoy them!
