Mount St. Helens
When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980 the top 1,300 feet disappeared within minutes. The blast area covered an area of more than 150 square miles and sent thousands of tons of ash into the upper atmosphere. On May 18th, 1980 the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in southwest Washington state disrupted the lives of thousands and changed more than 200 square miles of rich forest into a gray, lifeless landscape. Now, twenty-two years later, the land around the mountain is slowly healing herself. Nature is covering the scars of the eruption but many people will never forget what happened that spring day.
